I got my homeowners renewal yesterday. It was for 8,500 a year. For a home built in Shenandoah in 1977, No claims did not flood. It had been creeping up every year, and it is making my mortgage unaffordable.

I called USAA and got a quote for 2700. Same coverage. When I canceled with my agent, he told me the state approved an increase of 30-40 percent annually. I could tell he was upset that he lost a big commission from the renewal.

It's decisions like this that keep people poor in this state. Want to know why everyone moves? It's this kind of thing.

This is my last year here. I won't be here for the renewal. I don't care if I have to rent my home to get out. I thought I'd post this so anyone that is facing a similar situation can call USAA. ( If they have a membership)

Nope, not CEO -- If I was, I certainly would not be living here. I would have moved long ago.

There is no question but that insurance, both homeowners and auto, will be the death knell for this state. Last one out, please turn off the lights.

Its OK. We elected Jeff Landry to fix it. I'm sure he's gonna get right on it any day now..

Louisiana will always remain a poverty state. As a former teacher, look at people’s priorities. It’s having school and free daycare raise their kids. The government pays for them. Most students are below grade level academically. Drinking and partying are priorities, though.

True, and it's just greed- and elected officials that don't care.

Shop home insurance every 3 years or sooner. Pricing game…lure you yr 1 pricing and make their money off of you years 3-5 or longer if you accept their ridiculous pricing.

Your low risk profile is paying for their risk plus a premium. Shop them often.

I just had this happen with a friend of mine in Covington. Home built in 1994. Never flooded. No insurance claims at all. Brand new roof in November.

His policy went up to 8,700.

I called my agent and they got him down to $4100

Then I told him to adjust something's and we for him to $3300

Still a lot but ended up saving him $450/month on his escrow

I'm not an insurance agent - I'm a contractor but it's amazing to me how many people just pay the premium and don't shop rates.

The bullshite part is the deductibles for hurricanes are percentage based at 5% so the only real reason anyone ever files a claim- is going to run most people over 20k

I used to be in the insurance business. You are selling an intangible. There is a reason insurance companies lobby hard to pass and retain mandatory insurance laws.

Want to sell some life insurance? Roll up on a house where someone died without it, and the head of household laid $10-15,000 out-of-pocket for a funeral. This is especially true with black females. They will have all 7 kids lined up signing applications, and you will get paid.

I haven’t had home insurance in 2 years. Paid them assholes for 20 years and never made one claim. I’m willing to take the risk at this point.

I was talking to someone last night. If you have a new roof. You can call a company out that does wind mitigation They inspect your house for 300 bucks one time but it’ll knock 700 off your premium.

The insurance lobby is so strong here, and the reason auto insurance is the highest in the country. They will not even discuss tort reform. TV commercials are geared to make it appear to the the Louisiana Lotto out there. “Go get the money you deserve now!”

We have USAA and ours went down slightly. Sadly not everyone has access to USAA and they don’t insure everywhere in south LA even if you can

Wind mitigation?

The issue is there are few inspectors here. I’m never really sure if it’s a grift or not. Also what exactly are they looking for? Because just standard new roof gets a deduction. Are they looking for additional means of fortifying?

I just had a huge tree from a neighbor's yard fall on my house - well, the attached garage roof. Tree also demolished three cars and a fence. I have USAA and just started the claim's process. Never filed a claim before. Premium was $2300 and deductible is $1000. I'm in for a ride that is new to me. I will let you know how smoothly things go with USAA but they seem to have a good reputation. What happens to my rates going forward, we shall see.
