quote:

“Nuss [Garrett Nussmeier] is a legit talent, and they did a really good job finally getting serious in the portal to put weapons around him.”

“They’re going to take a significant step back on the offensive line, but they’re better at the skill positions.”

“The big talk here is the way they’ve restructured. This isn’t an autonomous coaching culture anymore. [GM] Austin Thomas has a huge role building the roster, and it showed this offseason. The internal evaluation of LSU football will look more professional; they’re going to build BK [Brian Kelly] the best roster possible to go out and win games.”

“They have playoff expectations here, and it’s a better depth chart than he’s had in Baton Rouge. If they aren’t in the CFP, I think there’s some serious pressure here.”

The season will all depend on if Nuss takes another step up in his game and if he can get good chemistry with the transfer WRs.

Seeing Hilton healthy last year made me sad to see what could have been had he been healthy. We beat USC game 1 if he's ready to go. Even Kyle Parker made some incredible plays that we missed in the later games.

Injury bug got us last year, starting with the loss of Jacobian Guillory against Nicholls of all teams.

You should have put this in caps.

Much better depth this year, quality depth.

The bigger question is will he have time to throw and will there be a running game to take some of the pressure off him.

O line will determine how this season plays out offensively

Meh the oline wasn’t that lights out last year. Not much of a step back to take

Related to this, it depends also on whether or not we have a one dimensional offense. I think Nussmeier can take the next step if we have a legitimate running game. If we are solely reliable on him for offense, we're in trouble.

they speak about last year's OL like they were all-world quality or something

Right. I know we had some highly touted o-lineman last year, but we weren’t good as a whole. Couldn’t run the ball and pass pro wasn’t what it should have been.

Pass protection was elite until we lost Dellinger after losing Adams, by far our best backup OL. The worst game we had was UF and we were down two starters.

The depth was too young and not ready and that’s a legit criticism.

WIth the portal + LSU name, there is no excuse not to make the playoff. It's not like we were bottom feeders with NIL to begin with.

The oline was very solid last year especially in pass protection until Dellinger went out against A&M

Unsurprisingly we lost 3 straight immediately after that

Agreed. In terms of mobility and decision making even if he can be 75% as good as JB and JD the team will be in the playoffs.

Bad run game + no deep threat killed us last year.

I believe that to win the championship, a team has to avoid injuries to their key personnel. You have to expect some injuries, just hope that you get lucky and don't lose people you can't easily replace. This LSU team could go a long way if they stay healthy.

I'm kind of fascinated with the Austin Thomas quote. He's been a polarizing figure when it comes to how much he has actually contributed to the program and where.

He's done well at multiple stints at other schools and here. From the LSU page:
quote:

Thomas’s contributions during his earlier stints at LSU were pivotal for sustained success of the program. Arriving at the conclusion of the 2012 season, he helped the Tigers secure back-to-back top-five recruiting classes in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, Thomas was promoted to General Manager, making him the first in college football and SEC history. As General Manager in 2016 and 2017, Thomas oversaw all off-field aspects of the program, and was instrumental in building the staff and roster that would go on to win the 2019 National Championship.

He supposedly had a lot to do with Ole Miss' collective and may have been a driving force behind our build up of support for the portal acquisitions this past year.

I'll never understand why LSU dumped money to retain Nuss and clean the portal out but didn't do enough on the OL for him. We have some good young talent there but you can't put a premiere QB up with an unproven OL. Should've at least made more effort to get at least 1 more big name out of the portal. I think the first game is going to be ugly here regardless how well they end up as the season progresses. Campbell and Jones will be huge losses. This board doesn't seem to understand how good Campbell was.

Moore was the #1 center in the portal, Thompson was one of the top G/OT options, they think Chester will be a very good guard, Curne is considered a starter ready type FR, they are high on Adams as a starter at OT and Davis is a 5 star Soph. OT.

What more do you want them to do?
