The Archdiocese of New Orleans has reached a tentative settlement with hundreds of survivors of clergy abuse in its long-running bankruptcy case, agreeing to pay nearly $180 million in an effort to end the court battle that has consumed the local Roman Catholic Church for the past five years.
According to a press release issued Wednesday by the court-appointed committee that negotiated the deal on behalf of some 600 survivors, the archdiocese, its parishes and affiliated charities, and three of its four insurers will pay $179.2 million into a trust to benefit survivors, an amount that will be distributed after the church emerges from bankruptcy.
Money for the settlement would come from a variety of sources. The archdiocese, its 110 parishes and charitable organizations would all contribute funds, and additional money would come from the sale of church-owned real estate.

It would be paid to a trust and then distributed to survivors, who would stand to receive around $300,000 each if the funds were divided evenly.

If finalized, the agreement will also require the church, as previously agreed, to make public its full archive of records concerning sexual abuse.

Though the agreement marks a significant step in a case that is one of the longest running and most expensive of the 40 abuse-related church bankruptcy cases filed in the U.S. over the past two decades, the tentative settlement still must overcome several hurdles. The most significant is gaining support — or overcoming opposition — of more than half a dozen plaintiff attorneys who represent individual abuse survivors and are currently asking the U.S. Bankruptcy Judge to dismiss the case, which would enable them to bring state court suits against the church and potentially recover massive jury awards for their clients.

$300k per, is chicken feed for the Catholic Church.

Does this include legal fees? If the lawyers are on contingency this could be $200k, not 300.
I don't see how this makes up for a man of the cloth taking advantage of small children. It sure doens't make up for the leadership covering up for all this and moving these pederasts around and hiding them so they can do it again.

Damages should be 10x's the amount and life sentences for those involved.

How much are the attorneys keeping? I’m sure they’ll wave their fees for the hurting victims…

Not enough.
Bankrupt every catholic from here to rome.

You mean their enablers and accomplices right? I absolutely agree with you if they participated in it or covered it up. One problem is our current Pope has a few skeletons in his closet too with at least 2 cases of sexual assault he didn’t thoroughly investigate. Also another pedo priest moved right next door to an elementary school and they told nobody at the time. It hurts me to say all this, but it’s like nobody in the Church authority wasn’t touched by the sex scandals.

1000%. Not just the rapists but all those who perpetuated it. They not only destroyed those boys lives but they caused irreparable and incalculable damage to the Church. How many lost faith in God and turned away from religion?
Give each of those involved a Bible, put them in general population (not protective custody) and wish them good luck in preaching to those who need it.

And not to sidetrack, but hopefully this Pope will rescind the celibacy requirement for priests. It is an undeniable factor that, along with others, creates a unique environment within the church conducive to attracting and enabling such behavior.

Typically fees are taken off the top line on these type of settlements. In other words, if it wasn’t for the lawyers and fees, the victims would be getting $500k each. The judge usually has to sign off on the fee structure but you know how that is in Louisiana…

The pedos don't enter the priesthood to hide anymore. They now happily attend their local LGBT Unitarian church, dress up like women, and play girls sports.

Catholics are better than this. There are good men that have a chance to be real heroes by driving these vermin from the Church.

Maybe this is a dumb question but does this happen elsewhere? In Canada? In third world countries at missions?
If you recall your history, many priests in old Mexico (hundreds of years ago when it was a colony of Spain) had "not-a-wife" that was usually a widow that did the cooking and house keeping and sometimes had a romantic angle. This seems like a much better idea than the current business model.

This is the true cost. Any catholic defending the church needs to realize that it's not about the integrity of the church or the face of the church, it's the fact that immense harm is being done to individuals by those sworn to protect their flock. Those individuals have lost faith and turned away. It's sad.

In bankruptcy cases court approval is required. So we’ll see.

Does the New Orleans archdiocese even have enough real estate to cover the cost?
And when will they be able to sell that much real estate?
Are the plaintiffs suppose to just wait until the properties are sold?
