Nissan is in trouble in North America; likely to revive the XTerra SUV

Nissan used to have a reputation of being a solid car. But since they've been almost exclusively reliant on problematic CVTs, they've struggled to sell their cars. There has been an engineering exodus from Nissan over the last 15-20 years, and they are now known for pushing substandard products to people with bad credit who can't afford to maintain or insure their vehicles properly.
Most 5-6 year old Altimas out there are missing parts, and usually have unrepaired collision damage if they run at all. Many that are beyond 6-7 years old are sitting in an overgrown yard somewhere with a bad CVT. Nissan is facing bankruptcy. Their situation is so bad that the Japanese government attempted to force a merger with Honda, who quickly said no and instead went into a joint venture with General Motors for EVs. Nobody wants to bail Nissan out.
Their brand is damaged among car buyers and investors. First they tried to commit to EVs, but the public didn't like that and apparently Nissan didn't really know how to build those either (Honda ran away from them....and Honda desperately wanted an EV).
Now they are getting desperate. They want to offer something to people who actually maintain their vehicles and can afford something decent - and those people want something unique to accompany their highly underrated Nissan Z sports car.
The XTerra keeps bubbling back up with Nissan executives. Nissan can quickly put something like that together off of their next gen Frontier pickup chassis and assemble it in Mississippi or Tennessee:

They have everything they need to do this already.
Keep it very basic and off road capable

Nissan and Dodge are in a competition for the cheapest-looking interiors of all vehicles on the market. They both cost the same as competitors and have absolute crap interiors.

An SUV based on the Frontier would be a good start. The Pathfinder started out that way but morphed to a crossover. I just bought a Frontier. I like the basic interior with actual knobs and push buttons. The engine is one of the last NA V6’s in the mid-sized market. It gets the normal, shitty Nissan MPG, but is pretty damn fast. The frame might be old, but it works.

Their factory in Smyrna, TN has a good chance of closing by year end. Already down to barely 2,000 employees from nearly 8,000 just a few years ago.
They are done for, just a matter of when and not if.

This is sad. I have always like Nissan products but they have just made bad decisions over the last 20 or so years.
I had a first generation Titan and I loved that truck. It had lots of room and power. However, they sat on that design for way too long. Then the second generation design wasn't Earth shattering. I'm not sure if they make them anymore. Currently have an Infiniti QX60. It has been a great car but I think it lacks the bells and whistles that other premium brands have. Also, owned a Kicks for a short time. That was an agile fun car to drive. Never had a problem with it.
The Xterra was very popular in its day. I think a new version could do well. Not everyone wants to spend 60 - 100 thousand on a SUV.
I think the Rogue is a popular midsize SUV. It is a nice vehicle that can be purchased for a fairly reasonable price.
I think a big part of Nissan's problem is that they sell a lot of vehicles (Altima, Sentra, Maxima, Kicks) to rental companies. Those cars are then sold to the public after their rental life is over. A certain demographic purchases those cars, especially Altimas.
I think the new models of the Sentras and Altimas are really nice cars but no one is going to purchase them with their "perception".
At this point, I think they need to do away with the Altima and rename it to something else.

Dodge/Chrysler are capable of making compelling vehicles. They just have been so mismanaged by Stellantis that they have all but killed both of those brands.
I'm not sure how to fix them. Jeep and Ram will be okay but Dodge is going to be a tough nut to crack. I don't see how they make it without performance vehicles, and the government clearly doesn't want anyone having those anymore.

Ram needs to add a mid sized pickup. They are doing well as a brand. They need a Dakota to compete with the Colorado, Canyon, Ranger, and Tacoma.
The Gladiator is a nice product but it's a niche vehicle.
Since all those dealers are merged, maybe Dodge can get by with just a new Viper and a non-EV Dodge Charger for a while. Then eventually roll out a new Durango.
At the moment the Dodge Durango is a solid buy. You can still get it with a V8. It's the same design they've had for 15 years so it's pretty solid. It's a 1990s Mercedes chassis so it actually rides and drives pretty well.

Yeah but a Dodge Charger is at least entertaining - or it was before they killed it to build an EV version. An Altima is just depressing.
Literally anyone could have told them that an EV Charger is not going to work. But they did it anyways. And ended up killing it after like 6 months because the dealers didn't even want to order them.
