Of course we all know that but just ran across Shaq telling the story with David Stern asking him if he wants to play where it is hot or cold. Shaw said hot then Orlando got #1 pick.

Anecdotal but when you add all the anecdotal stories up you get a pattern

The Pels getting the number 1 pick so the NBA could sell the team comes to mind.

Why would the teams that lost out go along with it?

Also it’s amazing how it’s only the drafts where the top pick worked out never the ones it didn’t

Why would they know about it?

The two least valuable NBA teams are Memphis and NOLA, both worth a little over $3 billion.

If it comes out that the league has been actively rigging the draft / player trades / etc, what happens to the value of those teams. If I'm the owner of the Pelicans, I probably have $1 - $1.5 billion reasons to keep my mouth shut and just go along.

It’s a giant money pie and they each get a slice at the end of the season, if the most important/popular teams bring in more money that makes the pie slice larger for everyone.

The NBA is just a step above the WWE in terms of “sports entertainment”

Alternatively they could sue to recoup lost revenue/value
Of course that’s just the owner what about the GM coach scouts that get fired? Why wouldn’t they say anything, ever?

that’s not exactly how it works and 3 of the last 4 teams left are Minnesota, Indiana and OKC/Denver.

As always something like rigging the NBA draft every year some one would leak it

Listening to the Russillo podcast the other day one of the guests he had on is in the room for the lottery every year and said the way they do it its unriggable.

shite does seem rigged though the way mavs traded luka to LA then get gifted #1 pick.

If it is rigged the technology they are using to do it is super advanced though because it pulls 4 balls at once and would have to make sure they didnt mix them up

When teams need picks #1 they seem to get them. High school start from Cleveland? Pelicans need an owner to buy from the league? Hometown star leaves franchise for greener pastures? Dynasty with large following loses all star players with a historic coach? Many others too. Then you have Shaq’s story.

Sure they mix it up from time to time but no doubt they rig it
