ESPN: Caleb Williams and his family tried everything to avoid being drafted by the Bears

Quarterback Caleb Williams was so concerned about being picked by the Chicago Bears in 2024 that he and his family weighed circumventing the entire NFL draft, consulting with lawyers to figure out a way around the league's collective bargaining agreement while considering signing with the United Football League, details from a forthcoming book reveal.
"Chicago is the place quarterbacks go to die," Carl Williams, Caleb's father, told Seth Wickersham, author of "American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback," in the months before the 2024 draft.
Caleb Williams wondered aloud to confidants: "Do I want to go there? I don't think I can do it with [former Bears offensive coordinator Shane] Waldron."
The forthcoming book, to be published in September, offers a detailed account of what it means to be a quarterback at various levels, from high school to college to the NFL, and what it's like for legends in retirement. It features unprecedented access with dozens of quarterbacks and generational greats such as John Elway, Johnny Unitas, Warren Moon, members of the Manning family and Steve Young, among others. It also includes current signal-callers such as Kirk Cousins and Drake Maye.

"I don't want my son playing for the Bears," Williams told several agents in 2024.
Looking for a way around the league's collective bargaining agreement, Carl Williams spoke with Archie Manning, who helped Eli Manning assert a measure of control over his eventual team in 2004. He also met with labor lawyers and agents -- and even considered whether his son could sign with the United Football League and become an unrestricted NFL free agent in 2025 to be able to pick a team. In addition to the draft process, Carl Williams vented about the rookie wage scale, which could lock his son into the team that drafted him for up to eight years. He calculated hundreds of millions of lost market-value income.
"The rookie cap is just unconstitutional," Carl Williams told Wickersham, later adding that the CBA is the "worst piece of s--- I've ever read. It's the worst in sports history."

Chicago made a mistake drafting Williams over Daniels anyways. Said it before last years draft it was clear as day who the better player was. Daniels is more athletic, more dynamic, more accurate, and throws a better deep ball. Caleb Williams also crumpled when he played good teams in college, while Daniels game seemed to elevate in a lot of regards. I’m very glad Daniels avoided the abyss for QB’s in Chicago, but Chicago made the mistake taking Williams.
I’ll also add Williams is a Diva, while Daniels puts his head down and just plays ball.

Says something is unconstitutional and then in the next sentence talks about the agreement the players agreed to. Classic.
Also, the OT should call this article overall bullshite, I was told time and time again last season the bears offensive skill players are ELITE

There’s a Zero percent chance that dude read the cba. He was TOLD it’s shitty.

I’ll enjoy watching Caleb Williams never win a championship game

I’d imagine Daniels would have done fine in Chicago. Same for Mahomes if they would have taken him instead of Trubisky (lol)

Caleb's dad might have even worse advice for his kid than Nico Iamaleava's dad

Turn down almost $40M over 4 years fully guaranteed to go play in the UFL for $200-300k for a year and risk getting hurt with no long term guaranteed money.

Seems like a rational thought to me. Waldron sucked.

I also remember the look on Fields face when he got picked by the Bears. He sure wasn’t smiling.

I said it then and I'll say it now, the Bears made a mistake.

I said this even before the draft. He will be serviceable but that’s about it.

He actually could have gone to a different league. If Chicago didn't sign him he would be in the next draft.
Tampa drafted Bo and he went to baseball. The following year Oakland took a late round flyer and it worked.
The big risk would've been getting hurt.

And by most accounts, he doesn't play well with others.

Probably but it's also Bears and Bears and QBs don't go well together. They'd find someway to frick it up

If unconstitutional, challenge it.
As far as the CBA being bad, it’s because you have 32 billionaires with 1 single goal (more money now) negotiating against thousands of players that all have different financial situations, needs, and goals.
Foxsworth brought up a point last year that the players association should disband/de-unionize and remove the antitrust protection from the NFL.

What accounts? I'm genuinely curious because his USC teammates thought he was great, and he appears to be well-liked in Chicago so far.
