When was the last time you read True Grit ?

I picked up this 240 page sprint the other day and I cannot remember the last time I read a book that fast. I could not put it down. It was my second time reading Charles Porter's 1968 masterpiece. If you haven't read it or don't own it, do yourself a favor and go spend $5-15 and add it to your library. It is an absolute classic.

I try to read it every 4 or 5 years. An American classic.
The first movie with John Wayne was an abomination, not even remotely true to the book. They tried to make it a western and its not.
Second movie was much more faithful.

Oddly enough I didn’t even know it was a book except I was in square books this morning and walking around and saw the westerns section and saw true grit on the shelf it stopped me in my tracks. Had no idea that book existed

The Coen brothers movie is far superior to the John Wayne movie

It shocked me when I saw it was released 15 years ago. Quick decade and a half gone.

3 yrs ago went on a big western run. True Grit, Lonesome Dove series, Blood Meridian, Empire of the Summer Moon, few others.
True Grit is a fun read. Didnt realize how the movie dialogue is so close to the book before I read it.

I read it many times over the years. Most recent read was about 6 months ago. A true classic!

Finally got to reading this one, and I finished it over the weekend. Wow, what a stunning book. I love the Coen film, and I was surprised just how accurate they were to the source material.
The entire scene of Mattie being trapped in the pit was chilling. The writing and pacing of it all was perfection, and it has been quite some time since I've had a book hit me like that. I knew the outcome ahead of time, but that did not matter.
I'm now trying to convince my 10yo to read it. I think I have her ready to do so.

I had never read it, then my daughter gave me the paperback about 4 years ago. I felt obligated to read it, and it was surprisingly fast and easy to read. I enjoyed it immensely. I must admit that I rarely reread books.

I've never read it, thanks for the recommendation.
Jeff Daniels version is the better movie, IMHO..

I would encourage everyone to check out other works by Charles Portis especially Norwood and The Dog of the South.
Both slender novels, funny AF with unreal dialogue.

I read it for the first time a few years ago. Think it was in the month of March and when I finished I knew it would be the best book I read all year.

Haven’t read True Grit yet but I read Norwood earlier this summer and loved it. True grit and dog of the south are next up for me once I finish lonesome dove
