The 1987 Box Office is bonkers, never would have guessed the #1 film

Predator didn't even chart, and Spielberg was in his Color Purple/Empire of the Sun phase and between Indiana Jones films. Star Wars had also just ended in '83 and Star Trek IV hit a year earlier in' 86.

So that leaves is with what has to be one of the most bizarre box office years in recent history. Absolute batshit by today's standards.

3 Men and a Baby was massive. It was funny and charming, and I still remember all the hype surrounding this movie.

One sequel, one adaptation of a TV series, one adaptation of a book by a respected author, the rest were original screenplays. It is a different world now.

Yeah Danson in his Cheers heyday, Magnum PI, and Guttenberg was huge at that time, it was pretty much a guaranteed hit.

The Untouchables is so great, some really good flicks on that list between that, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Good Morning Vietnam, Lethal Weapon, and The Witches of Eastwick.

Secret of my success was a pretty solid comedy as well.

I remember interviews where Danson and Guttenberg would talk about how they considered themselves big stars at the time, and they'd walk in some public place with Tom Selleck and realize that every eye was on him.

That's why you shouldn't use box office to gauge movie quality.

Probably the greatest theme music ever created to be used in a film about a creature that hunts humans when it gets hot outside.

The Secret of My Success is a forgotten hit from the 80s. I think I saw it twice in the theater. People loved that movie.

Also about half of those movies were R rated and Three Men and a Baby and The Secret of My Success were about the only ones aimed at the family movie crowd.

Thats just box office gross......

Don't forget Wall Street came out that year as well. Douglas took home the Oscar for lead.

The Last Emperor took Best Picture.

Also that year: Dirty Dancing, The Princess Bride, Robocop, Predator, Full Metal Jacket, Broadcast News and Harry and the Hendersons.

Helluva year for sure.

Yeah 87 was actually a great year for films, but the top box office draws are insane to look at when you compare them against the last 10-15 yrs.

The depth of the movie business then was crazy. You could legit say 30-40 good to decent movies came out in that time. Plus you had such diversity of genre. Action, romance, thriller, drama, comedy, all had big runs. It was still a business run by adults.

Now, you may get one decent film a year and that's a stretch.

I'm going to have to go back and do a rewatch of this one. Pretty sure I've seen it but the plot line is not ringing a bell. Sort've reads like the Mary Poppins version of the darker Bright Lights Big city?? I do remember that one.

Ya know the older I get the more I view Fox as a bit of an American treasure. He never took himself too seriously so Hollywood kind've overlooked him sometimes but he's been around along time and always been pretty solid.

I watched Fatal Attraction and I did not like it all. Glenn Close is not someone I would cheat on my wife with. Very ghastly looking.
