Chet Lemon, a mainstay of the ‘84 Tigers, has passed away at the age of 70. Cancer, I believe.

You don’t see a lot of Chet’s these days.

As a kid growing up in the 80’s Chet Lemon was one of those ballplayers that you knew of but he didn’t get a lot of accolades. He was just a hard nosed solid ball player that was a staple of the 80’s. Rest in peace!

No he had been battling some rare blood disease for like 30 years that had caused a bunch of strokes that left him in a wheelchair unable to walk or talk. Really a sad situation. Guy may not have been a Hall of Famer but he was a solid gamer who could help you beat people, give me a team full of those folks and we'll do all right.

Was lucky enough to play for him in my teens. He was battling some type of blood disease even back then(I’m 35).
Sad to see him go. I imagine he’s had a rough go of it these last couple decades.

He also played for the White Sox, where he had to wear those stupid shorts.

If you’re 45 - 55 you were in that sweet spot growing up, you barely had cable if at all, but you never missed This Week in Baseball w/ Mel Allen. You could recite every teams lineup by heart, like it was nothing, when playing wiffle ball against the boys in your hood.
Chet Lemon, Ralph Garr, & Claudell Washington in that OF and who couldn’t forget Ol’ Pudge in them softball knickers.

NES RBI Baseball nostalgia legend. That Detroit lineup was insane.

I miss these days. Now, these "superior" athletes pull a fingernail and it's to the DL for 2 months. The roster is nothing but a revolving door of injuries.

I grew up playing ball in Orlando, and he was a huge community guy. Good guy, good family. RIP Chet.
