Alabama OKs bill to allow Juniors and Seniors who do not participate in extracurricular activities to enroll in college. Does anyone know if this is implemented in any other states and how helpful it is to the students involved?

I’m sure all the other states are doing this already besides Alabama.

I had a semesters worth of college credits when I graduated high school. This was NM back in 2004. All transferred to LSU

Love it.

Keep them active and occupied on something useful and get them trained up.

This is good stuff.

OH, bravo Alabama for taking this step.

From the article:

quote:

SB 196, sponsored by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, allows students to “move on when ready” from high school. Rep. Matt Woods, R-Jasper, who carried the legislation in the House, said it is modeled after a similar program in Georgia that has operated for more than 20 years.

Dual enrollment/MOWR is common in GA. My kid chose to do AP classes instead. He graduated with close to 40 credit hours.

I think Tennessee has allowed dual enrollment in HS and community colleges for a while now.

I graduated with 33 college credit hours and I grew up in a tiny town in west Texas. Made college much more difficult due to taking nothing but core classes but I liked it because I didn't have to take any of the dumbass social electives like art history or some bullshite. I also was 1/7 in my graduating class with a double major as a result.

Similar program - My Dutchtown HS student is already taking several dual enrollment classes that will earn college credits.

quote:

Dutchtown High School offers various dual enrollment courses, allowing students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. These courses are typically taught at the high school by instructors who are also credentialed college adjunct instructors, or online/hybrid by college faculty. Students can take courses towards technical diplomas, associate degrees, or transfer courses towards a bachelor's degree.

My Daughter is in a dual enrollment nursing program in High School. When she graduates high school she will if she stays the course, have a high school diploma and an associates degree in health care services and, if her GPA is above a 3.0 she has a guaranteed spot in the 4 year nursing degree program at the Medical College of Georgia and if she finishes in the top 5 of her class (she won't LOL unless some miracle takes place) she will have a full ride in the same school with a major of her choice. She is pretty much on pace to make the GPA. If she does that she will be eligible for an almost free ride with Georgia's HOPE scholarship. It is a HELL OF AN OPPORTUNITY. Her school also offers a similar STEM program. If she stays the course, and she is adamant she will because she wants to earn more than her brother LOL....she will have a 4 year nursing degree and it will cost us about $10K all in. Hard to beat in this day and age....

We are headed to a place where success is all that matters. Scary. Now you will have the students who "try" going to high school in the morning and afternoon and attending college at night.

Will have to work weekends in order to pay for it.

The program our daughter is in does not exclude extracurricular activity...in fact it requires them. She is in band.

I graduated with almost 20 hours credit back in '99 thru AP tests, ACT scores and Spring testing at LSU. If they're ready, why not?

From the article:

Woods said the program is different from dual enrollment, a program where students can complete college courses for high school credit while still being enrolled in high school classes.

“They would no longer be enrolled in high school, they would be enrolled in college,”

Laura Hall, D-Huntsville, on the difference between the programs. “They would earn credit back for high school credits for their high school graduation requirements.”

Interesting. So they would essentially be a dual enrollment student but going the other way? College students getting high school credits?

Heck. many colleges are adding more and more online courses. It may be that they do not even have a lot of face to face in a classroom setting.

Louisiana does something similar to this with dual enrollment. In my opinion, this is way better than AP classes.

One caution is that AP is “risk free” in that nothing you do, good or bad, impacts your college GPA. You either earn the score to get credit or not. Dual enrollment, you earn a grade that follows you in terms of GPA.

My daughter will graduate with her accosiates, with a 4.79 gpa. She plays volleyball, and will get TOPS in Louisiana. Hopefully she doesn’t waste it.
