Toning down crawfish spice

I'm throwing a boil next weekend and I tend to lean on a heavy hand with the spice. But given the Yankee audience I need to tone it down while still making sure they have some kick. Does anyone have a ratio they recommend in this situation? I'm likely overthinking it, but I want people to enjoy them but I also realize I can't use the amount of spice I would normally apply. Maybe I've just been up north too long and now I'm a Yankee.
TIA and sorry for yet another crawfish thread.

My recipe involves adding cayenne for heat, so I can just not do that if I'm boiling for a bunch of kids/out of towners. In your case maybe just add more water than usual to your pot
That obviously will mute all your flavors and not just the heat, but probably the easiest way to deal with it.

Well post your recipe and we can help you alter it. Normally it's as easy as just removing the liquid boil (and/or extra cayenne) if you add liquid and powder, but without knowing what you are working with, we don't know what you already consider "spicy."

Just use 1 bag of crab boil seasoning. No need to add anything extra.

Cajun Bayou blend has outstanding flavor but very little spice
I have a friend with a commercial rig that does a lot of corporate events and this is the seasoning he uses

quote:need salt brother…bags of boil, salt, lemon. As long as the crawfish are seasoned well (salt) they are edible without the heavy pepper spice
Just use 1 bag of crab boil seasoning. No need to add anything extra.

But why? A bag of boil is made for a sack of crawfish. Why do people always think there must be more salt and more seasoning added? The bag of boil doesn't have enough salt? Seafood boil bag directions don't tell you to add more salt.
It's like when you see all of these online videos of guys barbecuing and using 5 different bbq rubs on one piece of meat...why isn't that one rub good enough?
Salt is a flavor enhancer, so if you think the flavor of the bag isn't good enough, I understand. But I guarantee most people who use it are using it because they think they are supposed to.
But anyway, back to the Original Question...if you want to tone down the spice, don't add any extra spice. A bag of seasoning is designed for one sack, so why do you feel you need to add more spice? There's nothing unflavorful about just using one bag with no extra salt or pepper.

They also don't tell you how much water to use, which is pretty important. Some seafood boil bags also tell you to boil the crawfish for 7 minutes and then sprinkle it on the crawfish in an ice chest and to let steam. Don't believe me?

SYM is my go to seasoning, but there's no way in hell those directions are worth a damn.

Boo.
What about adding a dipping sauce to let them cool the spice level off of whatever in-pot seasoning you decide? Yankees don't know any better anyway, and they'll be used to the concept from Indian food, etc. Cut the amount of hot sauce you put in the recipe for the sauce.

I hope people are saying to add salt because they think you are talking about the old school mesh bags of just seasoning that people used to use and not powder like pro boil. If yall are adding salt to the powder, yall some nasty mfers.

The online videos showing people putting multiple different "rubs" on a single piece of meat they are barbecuing do sort of drive me sort of crazy as well, though.

Sure, but if it tastes good who fricking cares? Where is the rule you can only use one seasoning and never modify it written?
