Did another snake trip to West Texas last week and stopped at a flip site in South Texas on the way. We were flipping tin in a field looking for snakes when we discovered 2 of these little guys under some tin…

If I had found these ‘yote pups on the way home and not right before I had to spend 7 more nights in hotels, the temptation might have been too hard to resist.

Not many snakes moving out West yet - only found 12 - in stark contrast to the 103 I found in September.

Highlight was a gorgeous mottled rock rattlesnake - a top target of mine.

Also got a gorgeous long-nosed snake…

And the prettiest Sonoran gopher I’ve seen yet…

Also got 9 Western diamondbacks…

Other finds included a Texas horned lizard…

A roundtail horned lizard…

…and many scorpions, including this striped bark scorpion carrying her babies…

Spotted our first ever mountain lion, but it was a bit too far away (300-400 ft) at night so no pics except for these distant glowing eyes…

Also saw the obligatory elk, ringtails, javelina, gray foxes, deer by the dozens, etc. Incredible place even when the snakes aren’t on the move.

Nice haul. I saw this one on Camp Shelby on Sunday:

We also found a massive one dead on the road - fell victim to one of the oil trucks.

Damn-that thing is huge.

My friend rode his gravel bike by the nose of that rattler at Camp Shelby by 6”. I stopped short.

I’ve followed your threads for a while but I don’t recall, ever caught a pygmy rattler? I can’t seem to find one

This guy isn't impressed with only 12 snakes

Nonetheless, I love the threads and pictures. The scorpion with baby scorpions is pretty damn awesome

First impression for most people is that it is a baren waste land. Spend just a little time in the area and it becomes pretty obvious pretty quick that it is absolutely loaded with living things of all sorts...its an amazing environment, especially for those of us from the east coast who tend to thing if there ainn't massive trees there aint much life...

Great pictures. Jealous you got to see a mountain lion. I had daydreams of seeing one when I hunted out there in December but I didn't sit still long enough to even look.

what part of Texas did you visit?

So that pic with the live gray rattlesnake resting his head on top of your foot. How exactly do you determine when it's safe to do that? There isnt a chance in hell that would ever happen to me intentionally regardless, but the rest of the venomous snakes you appear to have enough concern about to not be handling loosely and taking photo's within striking distance. What was different about that one?

I agree. My middle kid is reptile/amphibian/critter obsessed. He loves to go "herpin" whenever we visit someplace. Heck, we drove to south Florida just so he could chase iguanas.

I will never understand the desire to find and handle snakes. Nope. But it is cool to see.

Off topic, but a few years ago was driving through central Alabama, and there was a timber rattler in the middle of the road. But his nose was on the yellow line and his tail was crossed over the white. I didn't have time to stop and take a picture, but that would have been close to a world record timber, right?

This trip we hit a bunch of areas from Del Rio all the way to Lajitas.

It comes down to reading their body language. For instance, the rock rattlesnake was very defensive and constantly rattling and striking, so it’s generally a bad idea to do something like this…

But that Western diamondback only wanted to get away from us and didn’t strike at all. He was constantly on the go and I just needed him to stop long enough for a photo. And I was confident that if he did strike, it wouldn’t reach above my snake boots. While they have pretty good reach, they don’t usually launch like the gopher snake did…

Yep, I think the largest documented was just a tad over 6 ft.
