What makes LSU's Kim Mulkey think about retiring? Raising money for recruiting players

On Thursday, LSU basketball coach Kim Mulkey did something unexpected: she asked for help.
In a back room at Mansurs on the Boulevard, she met with eight Baton Rouge women — not to talk about X's and O's but about money. Some of the women were die-hard fans. At least one admitted she didn't know "what a free throw does." That didn’t matter. Mulkey was there to explain how women’s sports survive in today’s world.
Thanks to the transfer portal and the rise of name, image and likeness — which allows athletes to earn money while still in school — recruiting has become a high-stakes game.
quote:
To stay in the game, in every sense, Mulkey has got to figure out a way to supplement the money the women's basketball program gets from the LSU athletic department.
"I want to educate you in a way where you understand what's going on. LSU takes care of me, OK? Our coaches are well paid, I'm well paid," Mulkey said. "But this NIL, here's the deal ..."
quote:
"For all of us in athletics, we've got to pull for football, and we've got to pull for men's basketball because the NCAA Tournament is where the men in basketball get the money and we reap it. When we get to the College Football Playoffs, we reap it."
quote:
Mulkey explained that none of the big women's basketball programs make money — not LSU, not UConn, not Tennessee, not even South Carolina, a program that generated nearly $5.9 million in revenue in fiscal year 2024. The program's expenses, however, were at $11.5 million, resulting in a $5.6 million loss.
quote:
Mulkey explained that the pay-to-play conundrum is the reason Nick Saban left coaching. He didn't sign up to raise money that would allow him to recruit student-athletes. Even though everyone involved wants the athletes to get their due, Mulkey says the current system isn't sustainable.
Mulkey said Roberts arranged the luncheon not just to educate — but “to keep me from retiring.”

Completely reasonable.

Player contracts and salary caps are inevitable. Just get it over with...

Let her retire, hire a young coach shift more resources to football and basketball

She will retire within three years. I don't blame her. College Sports flair is dying off... I think.

This wouldn’t change anything. You can’t cap endorsements, and some boosters will always be willing to up the ante to give their program an advantage.

She will retire in the next 3 years or after the next national champioship

Is that a serious post?

It could significantly affect the transfer portal and that's the real problem here anyway.

I think she does at 70 or wins another I thinks she’s 64,65,66 somewhere around that.
She’s 63 so I’ll say 6 seasons or a Natty out the door

Let her retire from coaching and appoint her as the new AD.

Only if the players first become designated as employees and then AGREE to a salary cap. The only reason the NFL has a salary cap is because the players union agreed to one. It's why MLB doesn't have a salary cap. The player's union has never agreed to one. The NCAA , conferences and/or schools won't be able to unilaterally impose a salary cap.

Another HOF coach that's going to get pushed out before they want to.

Serious post? No.
Grammatically correct? Again, no.

That's probably how athletic directors feel when they have to figure out a way to justify to boosters why they should pay $3+ million annually to the coach of a sports that loses millions of dollars a year.

I hate NIL. No kid coming out of high school deserves this kind of money to play a sport. I’ve always been someone that felt they should get more than tuition because they do help bring in money for the school but not ths level of money being thrown around.

That's an interesting take. What makes one "deserving" of a certain amount of money? If a kid is a really gifted musician, artist, scientist, etc at a young age and his/her services are in such high demand that multi-million dollar companies and/or just fans are competing to pay huge sums for those services would you say the kid doesn't "deserve" that kind of money?
Who am I to say whether someone does or does not "deserve" a significant amount of money? If there is a free marketplace willing to pay that amount of money to a kid then he/she "deserves" it.
Media companies pay billions for the rights to broadcast games involving the players. Companies pay millions for the opportunity to advertise their services/products during said broadcasts. Fans, collectively, pay millions for the opportunity to watch the player perform in person. Wealthy fans/supporters willingly donate millions in an effort to help their favorite team/school win at the highest level. I'd say the kid "deserves" every dollar someone is willing to pay him for his talent.

If they’re that good, go pro. College is amateur athletics, the ability could be pro level but the money is earned when you are a professional. There has to be a standard plain and simple.
