Evans over Cowan

I'm curious as to CJJ's rationale moving Evans to a starter role and keeping Cowan in the bullpen. Evans was great last week and solid yesterday, but Cowan is a proven weekend starter as opposed to a true freshman who, up until last week, had never started an NCAA game.
I think the difference between either one of them starting is marginal, but just curious if it would be better to have their roles reversed.

Evans is an elite pitcher for a freshman. He is more than likely the Friday night guy next year.

We have a lot of things to complain about but Evans as a starter isn't one of them.

I'd like for them both to be back in the bullpen.

Yeah man I see what you are saying but Evans had his C game yesterday and zero command of his pitches and is so talented he only gave up 1 run to a really good lineup in 4 innings.

I'm not complaining at all about Evans starting. Both guys have been lights out all season in pretty much any role they have been put in. Just a Monday topic of discussion other than, "The sky is falilng!!! We suck!!!"

I think it's more about who was used earlier in the series. With Cowan throwing a few pitches in game 1 of the series, you know he's available for relief. I would think that if Evans had gone in first for relief on game 1 (either time), Jay may have tried to save Cowan for a Sunday start.
Another thought of mine is that Cowan is the older guy and more mature arm. So Jay feels better about letting Cowan pitch twice in a weekend, so he's the guy who goes in relief first in game 1 and possibly again in game 3.
It wouldn't surprise me if Jay is also looking ahead to next year. Knowing that Evans and Schmidt will likely be weekend starters.

Cowan was not lights out in both appearances over the weekend...in fact, he put our lights out...with no help from the offense either

Evan’s didn’t have a good game! He didn’t have his normal control. Cowhen got hit very hard. Only team to do it this season. Hopefully both will rebound very quickly!

Why are our colors purple and gold!!! Damn you CJJ

The discussion is very simple. 2 players (Curiel & Cowan) that have been consistently, elite players had an off weekend and we lost a series we easily could have won. If either of these elite players was on his typical game, we win the series.

Getting Evans some starting experience is important. If one of our first two SR games were to get out of hand you need someone reliable to start game 3. If we have the chance to win it in 2 games you can bet that Evans will be used out of the bullpen

Evans is your best arm on the staff.
He’s your Friday night starter next year.
I suspect the decision is splitting hairs…or based on which one can better handle multiple appearances on the weekend.
The first opportunity taken to start one Cowan had already pitched on the weekend. It could have been as easy as that.

They may both be bullpen guys right now if needed on Fri and Sat.
Evans as a starter is very possibly based on circumstance.

That seems to be the case. I do think the OP is a valid question. I was kinda thinking the same thing. The consensus seems to be that Evans is better, and to me that would suggest he's your go to guy in the pen, not the 3rd starter.
It's all personal preference. I'm a believer in establishing a 3rd starter, even if it hurts the pen a little. I get the flip side of the argument though.
Cowan would be an ideal candidate to start game 1 of a regional IMO, but Jay doesn't really do that so I guess it doesn't matter.

i don't think they ever planned to just use evans as a closer,I think it just happened to be late in the game when it was his turn to pitch in his first appearance or two and they just left him there until they knew what they had in him and didn't have in shores

Because he’s a fricking legit pitcher. No it’s not better to have their roles reversed.

Absolutely no idea why you’re getting downvoted. It’s a legit question, the stuff you discuss on a message board. People acting like asking the question is some kind of negative on Evans is moronic. His stuff to me plays better in a shut down closer role than Cowan’s. Also think Cowan is probably better suited to a starting or long relief role than as a closer. So I actually think Cowan as the third starter and Evans as the closer is more ideal.

When did he complain about it? The lack of reading comprehension on this board is astounding.

I’ve always felt like Cowan should be our Sunday starter, even before the season started. He was the Friday night starter on a pretty good Wofford team last year.
Even before this weekend, he hasn’t been as sharp or dominant out of the bullpen the last few weeks as he was earlier in the year.
So maybe a change in role (a role he may be more comfortable in) would be a good thing for him.
And you can have Evans as your ace out of the bullpen.
