From the chapter in the book I'm reading on immigration and racism. They want to find out if your name's ethnicity stops you from getting an interview. The initial job application they read only has name and age. No picture. So, if a black applicant is named Bob Smith they could assume he's white. But if his name is Lavonius Jackson they have a hint. The results are determined by the ratio of how many applications from a group = one of them granted a personal interview. The results from worst to best:
1. Muslims. Only 1 of 15 Abduhl Mohammends get an interview.
2. Blacks. Only 1 in 10 get it.
3. Whites and Asians are tied for best results.
There is no difference between males and females of each group.

All prejudice isn’t bad. We all make judgments. The real question is which pool offers the greatest odds of getting the job done, imo.

Are resumes the same?

I've seen roles where we get hundreds of applications.
But, maybe 30 ppl have the minimum qualifications posted.

The moral of the story: the black community has a lot of work to do to improve their reputations.

Have you seen this study before?

A white person with a felony conviction is more likely to get hired than an equally qualified black person with a clean record.

But we hear mediocre white men here whine endlessly about DEI because they can’t get better jobs.

ETA there’s a whole book about it. Marked by Devah Pager.

IDK, the chapter was about the problems with aff action quotas. If employers won't even interview minority job candidates then it must be racism. Then how do you make things equal? Quotas have been used and they've caused a lot of resistance since it hires less qualified people. So, the name study examines where qualifications don't even come into play (that happens at the interview).
Now, does that mean the employer is racist by judging by name? The conclusion was 'generalization by race.' IE, if I only have time to interview one tenth of a thousand applicants and look at their qualifications then I'm going to get rid of the people with the highest risk of being unqualified.

This has been known for awhile. its apparent on mortgage applications as well.

But the government is not the right solution for it. It leads to overbearing policies like DEI.

the private market has to fix hiring discrimination on their own.

See that’s the real question that gets lost in the emote Karen community. It’s about intentions, not product

List the white men here.

What qualifies as white male mediocrity ?

And I’ll make a donation to the charity of your choice if you can link me to a post here that meets what you outlined in that quote.

The civil rights movement was about blacks. Blacks revere the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was about being able to sue for damages for discrimination. Modern American society promotes the idea that bad things that happen to blacks are because of their race.

Makes blacks less attractive to hire IMO. If it doesn’t work out, will you end up in court?

Let me tell you: very often you will.

ETA I love black people and personally give everybody a fair shake.

Sorry. Degrees from HBCUs don't count as those from real schools.

Ahh. The whites who got us to outer space, invented everything we use nowadays. Computers, cars etc.

Sorry we aren't ok w being good at our jobs. Then some minority gets handed a great role when they don't know shite. Any corporate workplace has a lot of minorities that are totally incompetent.

I don't interview people that list "University of Louisiana" on their application.

Blacks are lazy at work period I work with them, I work for a big petrochemical plant and the blacks are 100% the most entitled, and have the worst punctuality and attendance. They have awful attitudes and are not good at the job. And it’s industry wide by on large blacks are the worst plant operators and that’s a fact.

The way it works now (in my last 2 decades) is hiring managers don’t even get to see all the applications. We see the list curated by HR.

We get fed absolute dogshit applicants, honestly, and never know who we missed out on.

I can’t recall the last male I was able to interview. I would dare say out of the last 20 interviews, it has been maybe 3 white women, 7 Hispanic women, and 10 black women.

I was forced to hire an HBCU grad a couple of years ago. I told them that I’d rather not fill the position than hire her. A few months in, it was clear she was a horrible employee. I had to document incidents and the attempts to correct. It took OVER A YEAR before I was finally allowed to fire her, and it took intervention from IT to show that she was lying about her time card.

All that to say. Yeah. In the old days, I’d chunk your resume if it was clear you wouldn’t be a fit. But I also hired a lot of awesome black people that were a fit. Skin color and name don’t define you, but your attitude and career path can.

Yeah, no shite. If I hire a white guy, and he is terrible, I can fire him. Not so much with the ethnic minorities. Plus you will get a better hit rate with the whites and Asians.
