So anyone who watches LSU baseball games on SEC Network + has no doubt seen (about 8 million times) the LSU med school commercial about Sepsis testing.

They make it a point to say that LSU developed the first ever test for that can detect Sepsis "before symptoms present themselves"

I have absolutely no medical background or schooling, so my question is:

What would bring you to be tested for Sepsis (or anything else for that matter) before you even have any symptoms?

I imagine a dirty finger (or hand) in any orifice would warrant a test.

Sepsis is not a specific disease. It is simply a combination of:
tachycardia
tachypnea
fever
leukocytosis, leukopenia or bandemia

So i have no idea what their test means, it can be caused by a ton of stuff

Could be infections of any kind. A cut that hasn't healed, staph, flu etc.

You'd go to the doctor for something like that but you wouldn't have symptoms of sepsis(super high fever, organ failure, etc).
So if they could detect it that early, you aren't almost dying before they catch it.

I had a friend die of this a couple years ago. Intestinal blockage. Goes in for the pain assuming it would be antibiotics and a big ole enema. Sepsis got him 48 hrs later.

I think practically you’ll probably present with symptoms most times but they’re saying the test is good enough that the test can detect it before symptoms even reach a macro level bc it’s found on a cellular level.

There is a set of symptoms that point towards an oncoming sepsis. Traditionally, you would have a blood culture run at that point and most often placed on broad-spectrum antibiotics. The cultures typically take around 72 hours to grow out before you can be placed on a targeted antibiotic. If sick enough, often times that is too late, and there is a high mortality rate. This test can give the specificity of the organism in a couple of hours. It really is a game changer and will save a ton of lives moving forward. Sepsis is the number one killer in hospitals. It can start from any type of infection, such as a cut, appendix, pneumonia, etc.

Is that what the commercial is about? Blood specific PCR panels have been around for a few years. They detect the species much faster than waiting for the culture result and they are very sensitive. As soon as the culture turns positive, run the panel, get the species, tailor antibiotics. They can also detect certain resistance genes. No idea why any asymptomatic patient would ever get tested though. I just figured the commercial was about something different.

Here is the entire dialogue spoken in the commercial:

quote:

Deaths from Sepsis are preventable with early detection. But the technology hasn’t existed until now.

At LSU, we teamed up with Our Lady of the Lake Health to develop the first test that identifies sepsis before symptoms occur.

It’s already saving thousands of lives and changing patient care forever.

and the commercial itself if you haven't seen it yet
