By shifting its actual athletic department into a private, for-profit company structure, Kentucky will be able to explore new ways of raising money, including public-private partnerships, to handle expenses as college football and other sports prepare to share revenue with athletes.

“We believe this is an innovative approach, a new structure and governance model that thoughtfully contemplates how we strengthen Athletics, protect and promote the University, and open up new opportunities for growth,” Kentucky president Eli Capulouto said.

Wow. Need more information, but this certainly seems like going in the direction of killing college sports.

Interesting so now will fans be able to sue if some kid fricks his life up and tanks the fan’s investment?

This path could lead to athletics being technically split off from the university, but the university licenses use of their logos and facilities to the private entity.

I’d rather just watch professional sports if this is the future direction for everyone

So Kentucky student athletes are now employees/contractors of the LLC?

And in that regard how do scholarships work? If Kentucky athletics is a separate entity, how does playing for Kentucky equate to access to the University of Kentucky? I'm sure people smarter than me have the answers to this but the mechanics of separating the entities and still having "student athletes" is interesting

I guess it’s a relief for professors and tutors. No need perpetuating the fiction that most of these guys are students.

I remember when I was going to UNL and if I had a football player in a gen Ed class most of the time they'd hardly show up. Usually every other week, midterm and final.

So, Kentucky is the first college sports franchise.

Neat.
