Would you support School Choice in your state?

Texas recently passed a school voucher plan that will essentially provide an annual payment of $8 - $10k from the state to the accounts of eligible children to be used for approved education-related expenses like private school tuition, pre-k, tutoring etc.
In larger metro cities where there are more private schools I could see this being a positive for some families who maybe are on the fringe of being able to afford private schools and need a little extra.
But if you live in a rural area and there aren't private schools available then wouldn't this just reduce the available funds for public schools? Or reduce the amount available to kids whose parents can't afford private school tuition even with a voucher in the larger cities?
ETA: The largest benefactor seems to be families who could already afford to send their kids to private school. Feels like a subsidy for the rich

Yes, public schools suck in my area
And private is too damn high
And private is too damn high

No
and not just no, but hell no. It's not a private school if taxpayer money goes to fund its student's admission.
The people who pay the money get the product. School vouchers are socialism. Period.

Charter and private schools and their students will flourish, public schools will only continue to get worse. The rich keep getting richer at the expense of the poor.

No. Louisiana will turn it into TOPS 2.0 in no time. Tops started out great, then universities jacked up tuition and made even more money.

No, especially in the supposed form where wealthy parents essentially get a discount with their children in private schools while at same time gutting public schools in areas where the nearest private school may be 50 miles away.

As a matter of fact, I'm for the opposite.
If your student is enrolled in a private school, you should get a tax deduction, so that you aren't paying for someone else's child's education in a public institution.

Support. I would think if you did vouchers, private schools would just increase tuition.

Agree, but someone will figure out how to bend the rules and profit in a similar fashion as the Tops program. This isn't going to be some great financial equalizer. Private school's will simply increase tuition so they can continue to keep the undesirables out.

I hope you understand that this is a private school's only job and purpose.

quote:Gotcha yeah I agree with that . I think it was a bit more disingenuous by the previous poster to act like TOPS is the sole reason tuition has skyrocketed when increasing tuition is a nationwide problem.

Like private schools aren't just going to raise their tuition by the voucher amount...

Are public schools not socialism?

quote:Nope. Not at all. If they don't want to pay tuition, they're free to enjoy the benefit of their property taxes.

100%. This is one of the major reasons we're taking my daughter out of her private school. Why the hell would I pay ~25k for my 2 kids (son starting kindergarten) when a bunch of people just get to come for free!?

In Arkansas there is state money available for the school of your choice (at least I think there is).
Posted on 4/17/25 at 3:26 pm to Sterling Archer
School choice is nothing but a farce to legally funnel tax money to religious organizations. It also decreases funds for the schools that need funding the most.
