Watching the Week 10 Nerdcast: Projecting the Field of 64

They just wrapped up the show and got LSU as a #9 seed currently paired with the Oregon State regional.

D1baseball Field of 64
quote:

Baton Rouge regional
1. LSU (9)
2. Dallas Baptist
3. McNeese
4. Fairfield*

Beat a quality opponent last night, they have McNeese St in just ahead of the last 4 in. 5 SEC top 8 seeds. A&M on the rise. 13 SEC teams in the field in all which would be a record. Kind of surprised they don’t have Florida near the field at all with their #25 RPI.

Would be a big letdown to not get a top 8 seed.

We should be a national seed, but as a consolation I am selfishly fine with the committee always sending LSU to Oregon

At #9 currently lots of baseball left to be played. If we entered postseason in that slot how we did in the SECt one way or the other would put us over the edge

Why wouldn’t they? Their RPI is #1 at the moment and they just won a series against Arkansas and beat GT last night so some recency bias in there too

Ole miss regional is completely messed up....can't have SEC teams in the same regional

Ole Miss, Vandy and Texas A&M all grouped together can't happen

Settle down, everyone is aware. This is their early crack at the top 16 selections to host and who all makes the field. They do this every year.

Feel free to respond to their social media calling them idiots though, if you so choose. The overreaction of people at their "educated guessing exercises" to elicit response and interaction is always fun to watch.

They are #1 in the RPI.

LSU is #9 in the RPI. The biggest reason for that is their SOS (especially non-conf. SOS) is doo-doo.

That will obviously change some with Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas still left on the schedule. But I always wonder why LSU rarely schedules non-conf. series with good, power conf. programs? It seems like the risk of doing so (losing) does not really outweigh the potential benefit (a SOS/RPI boost). They're are enough games in baseball, particularly for a team in the SEC, to overcome a poor series vs. a good non-conf program. It's not like football where one loss to a power-conf non-conf. opponent (FSU?) can derail a season. But playing well in one of those would provide a bigger benefit than losing one would hurt. Plus, I would imagine the fans would be more excited to see LSU play an ACC, Big 10, Big 12 opponent in a weekend series in late February/early March than some obscure directional school from another state.

Worst case scenario is you lose 2/3 or 3/3, but you still get the SOS boost and you can easily overcome it in SEC play. Best case scenario you win 2/3 or 3/3, giving you a resume boost at the end of the year when the committee may be splitting hairs to determine hosts/national seeds. It would also help grow interest in the game because I'm sure more fans/potential fans would watch LSU v Clemson or LSU v Arizona as opposed to games against N. Alabama or Omaha

I don't think those are lined up as to who's in what regional.

Teams should be seeded without regard to what conference they are in. With 13 SEC teams in the ty, its OK to have more than one SEC team in a region.

We just need to take care of business at home the next 2 weekends. Win both series before heading to College Station with some momentum.

yeah good catch though, that wasn’t their final version with the regionals aligned to who was going where. They just posted the final version with who they have traveling where

Baton Rouge regional
1. LSU (9)
2. Dallas Baptist
3. McNeese
4. Fairfield*

Field of 64

If LSU goes 19-11 or 20-10 SEC from here on and wins a couple in SEC tournament games, TOP 8 seed- lots of ifs and ifs but that’s 9-6 to end season

nah that’s a tournament rule in fact that no conference opponents can be paired in the same regional. Hypothetically if all 16 SEC teams qualified for the tournament they’d all be in separate regionals. Now they may have to axe that rule if these super conferences grow anymore
