In February, I made a few comments surrounding the horrible rumors about Mary Kate Cornett’s alleged affair.

I now understand those rumors are fake and the affair did not happen.

I regret these comments and want to apologize to Mary Kate, her boyfriend, and both of their families.

I will learn from this massive mistake.

Here is a link to Mary Kate’s GoFundMe that was created to establish a foundation to help victims of cyber attacks (This is not currently accepting donations, but when it does re-open I plan on donating): gofundme.com/f/stand-with-m…

Another similar foundation is The Cybersmile Foundation: cybersmile.org

I know nothing about this really other than the general story.

I do know that KFC is one of the worst “personalities” on the internet though. Dude is 45 years old and gets tied up in every teenage drama story online. Pathetic

Won't stop the lawsuits

Do these people never learn? Half the stuff on the internet is fake, and the other half isn't true.

I know they are trying to minimize the legal damage, but don't they have to know it's false beforehand to be liable for defamation?

yeah frick the media even barstool. They don't care about accuracy they only care about clicks. They do it to Trump every day and I hope Mary Kate never has to work another day in her life (not that she would have anyways lol)

You’d think Portnoy of all people would be sensitive to this. What the media tried to do to him was total bullshite too

For non public figures, I don't remember the exact language, but I think it's something akin to reckless disregard for the truth.

I don't really know how that sorts out here - it's a farfetched idea, but there were plenty of voices talking about it, text chain images of people who claimed they were close to the situation and knew bits of it, etc.

Grok says

quote:

For private individuals, the standard is lower—typically negligence. This means the defendant failed to exercise reasonable care in verifying the truth of the statement. They don’t necessarily need to know it’s false, but they should have taken steps to ensure its accuracy and didn’t. The exact standard can vary by state.
There are nuances, though.

For example:
If the statement is so obviously harmful and unverifiable (e.g., a wild accusation with no basis), courts might infer recklessness.

Some jurisdictions have stricter rules for certain types of defamation, like libel (written) versus slander (spoken).

Defamation per se (statements so inherently damaging, like accusing someone of a crime) might not require proof of actual harm, but fault still matters.

Your best defenses as a private citizen defendant are truth and opinion. One isn’t looking good and I’d imagine these bozos were not qualifying this story as an opinion.
