Louisiana shrimp industry backs tariffs

LOUISIANA (KLFY) — Louisiana Shrimp Association President Acy Cooper says the impacts of tariffs on the industry is expected to do what shrimpers across the nation have been hoping for since imports began taking over.
The once $2.5 billion industry has significantly decreased over the years with cheaper imported products from countries like India and Ecuador. Cooper says he and the rest of the Shrimper’s Association backs the tariffs as it brings them one step closer to being able to save the once thriving industry.
“It’s really, really great that when you change administration like this, that something like this can really happen,” said Cooper. “It goes to show you the power makes all the difference in the world.”
With the tariffs in place, more jobs can be brought back to the industry as prices on imports rise and allowing local products to compete.
quote:
Cooper says even if the tariffs are discontinued, it will allow the federal government to notice the issues shrimpers across the country have been struggling with and be able to understand how much needs to be addressed to bring the industry back up.
“We’re talking about maybe even a cap on what’s coming in to give us some leeway,” he said. “We’re trying to get the attention to where he understands the urgency of what’s going on in this industry. Is the same issue over and over again works. If we all get to a point where we can’t survive. We’re going to lose this industry. That’s what we don’t want to happen.”

I do agree we should be tariffing the shite out of imported seafood, especially from places like China, Vietnam, and other SE Asian places where the stuff is raised, caught and/or processed in literal shite conditions.

I refuse to buy any foreign seafood

I never understood why they allow imported seafood... Just a question.. What seafood do we have to import that we can't catch here?

Congress a few years ago allowed foreign beef without labels.

Makes sense to tariff imported seafood and other goods we have the means to supply ourselves.

Norwegian seafood is the shite.

All foreign food should have huge labels saying country of origin.
All American sourced food should have a huge American flag on it.
I've said this for a long time. This isn't about tariffs, it's about consumer knowledge. I'm good with seafood, meat, and agriculture specific tariffs though.

Agree with everything you said.

Now we’re supposed to check a shrimps immigration status before we catch them?

I want my Grouper and Snapper from Florida, my Oysters from Alabama, my crawfish from Louisiana, and my shrimp from within that border.
Only seafood I get that isn't locally sourced is Salmon and Sardines. If you live on the gulf coast there is no excuse to buy Asian import shrimp or fish. I can excuse those in the middle of the country for buying whatever is available

because it is somehow substantially cheaper to buy the same food (treated much differently) than to get it right down the road. Tell me where the problem lies.

The seafood industry is national security.

another reason to appreciate HEB, where they at least attempt to source from Texas and in the USA.

Agree.
Though I’ve started buying my shrimp from the markets in Seabrook, about 30-40 lbs at a time, and freezing them in water. A bit cheaper than HEB, and you can taste the difference, for the better.
Actually started sourcing whole salmon from those places too, and filetting and vacuum sealing in the freezer.

We consume the entire catch each and every year. Demand for shrimp and crawfish far out paces the supply. Shrimpers will bitch about the price the big houses on the bayou are giving them, or they will bitch about fuel prices....shrimpers live to bitch
