China is using child labor and has no regard for their people. Countries like the U.S. cannot compete with this and it’s wrong and unethical. We are putting tariffs on these countries because that’s not what free trade is.
Free trade can only exist within a nations own borders. It is not "free trade" when you are expected to compete against what are effectively state entities, running off subsidies and slave labor. That is how you become a nation who consumes everything and builds nothing. Not a viable long run strategy.
Part of the reason the 08 crash hit us so hard was because our economy runs entirely on services. Meanwhile China's economy grew ~10% a year during the Great Recession.
Edit:
US corporations have to abide by unfair trade regulations overseas, regulations we do not apply to foreign competitors in our homeland. It is a complete farce to call that “free trade” - it’s a stacked deck, and it’s not in our favor.
Not to nitpick, but what age would the Chinese people consider as ‘unethical’ child labor in corporate manufacturing enterprises? A lot work hard in their youth in agrarian cultures with no pay but the food they grow. And could not our forced schooling be defined as ‘work’? We used to haul hay on the local dairy farms and loved that nickel per bale. IMO forced labor is not the same as chosen labor re ethical practices.
Yes, and thats because of sheer efficiency and technology. In the grand scheme its a small percentage of what what we consume. We consume much more than we produce.
If you support the stance of free trade, surely you can agree its not free trade for the US to have a hand tied behind its back when trading overseas while the local foreign competitor gets subsidized by their government, has open access to our markets?
That is not free trade, no matter how you want to spin it. You can admit you just like receiving cheap goods at the expense of American competition.

One of the bigger beneficiaries if mfg does return will be auto mfgs. I fail to see how arent subsidizing them, with near constant trade protections, direct bailouts, govt rebates and even billions to retool factories.
quote: So, what is a fair wage? Most of you guys on here hate unions for being too greedy, but a lot of you are sounding like union bosses lately.
Union are one of the main reasons why manufacturing left this country. Now we're putting tariffs into place that will empower the same unions once again.
Whats your solution for the lower middle and working class? Just frick em?
Look up marriage and child birth rates by class. We are quickly becoming a society where only the welfare queens and the top of the middle class + upperclass are having kids. Its not good for the country.

How much do you want government to help them? At some point they have to be self motivated if they want better for themselves.
There's hundreds of thousands of construction opportunities opening, why arent they taking those jobs?
Its not the place of government to disrupt an economy to subsidize people who have little self motivation.
Honest question: Why not push for some new CCC type program instead of interrupting the rest of the economy with this very expensive push to bring back mfg?
