Should give Mayers the ball tonight and leave him out there until he figures it out. We know Schmidt needs work too but the untapped potential of Mayers is something worth prying out of him. Who cares if we do down 3-4 runs, let the offense work and let him go.

Honestly, wrote this entire post without even thinking of it as a homecoming for him at Nichols. Point still stands, let him show us something. Against his old team is icing on the cake.

I would love to see him throw strikes. We could use his arm but I don’t see it working for us. I’d love to be wrong.

Sounds like a great way to lose a mid week game. I'd rather see guys like ware, rizy, noot, williams, and schmidt get time. They're much closer to helping us than mayers

I dont think Mayers is 1 game away from figuring it out.

He probably needs some serious work. 3 years of college and the walks are still a huge problemZ

We have plenty of guys that need work. Why are you should they prioritize Mayers?

I do agree with you but then again I don’t feel like watching 3 to 4 walked batters per inning either.

I feel like Ware, Schmidt and Rizy can improve on their command. I’m worried that Mayers just is what he’s going to be now. A dangerously wild pitcher with great stuff that you wont ever be able to rely on in big game clutch situations

Because if he can find it, its 99mph coming straight over the top, one of the hardest arm slots to pick up the ball out of the hand. When he is on, he is a strike out producer.

Yea but are you just saying he should start bc it’s his old school? Why not let Schmidt or Ware get the start? Obviously we need guys to step up but just curious why Mayers? Schmidt and Ware are more likely to be starters in Hoover and post season play and they are also more likely to be first out of the pen over Mayers

He is what he is, he is never throwing meaningful innings here unless we get in a jam.

Noot, Schmidt, Ware, Williams need to get first looks, those are the guys with a chance to pitch on the weekends for us

I mean this is his 3rd year trying to figure it out, and he hasn't yet. But again, we have other guys that need work. Are you saying he is more valuable than all of them? I'm not saying that he shouldn't pitch, but we just came off of a weekend in which we only threw 5 pitchers. There are a lot of guys that need work tonight and you want Mayers to go until he figures it out, which would likely in in a loss for LSU.

No. See OP below.

I personally think Mayers has the most upside this year. This is going to get backlash but we have seen Schmidt start, throw strikes, and still struggle.
His best stuff still gets sent over the fence. He got away with alot in high school that is being brought to light in college ball. That is normal, he will develop like he is supposed to and be a vital piece of the staff next year.

We just went through a tough series using only 5 pitchers. Pitchers 6 thru 12 need work in game situations. We need to throw the guys that Nate feels can be in the regular rotation in 6 weeks.

If Mayers is a guy he thinks can be there at the end of the season, then give him some innings. Otherwise, we need to give Rizy, Ware, Schmidt, Williams, etc, some innings and a chance to throw strikes.

This same stuff could have been said about Anderson last year when he was getting lit up in SEC play. Then LSU moved him back to the midweek to work on things and he ended up giving up zero earned runs over his last 5 games of the year.

The dude was a freshman all-american, pitcher of the year 2 years ago. You think Jay just picks guys up from the portal cause they're tall? Well yea, he does, but they also have to be able to pitch at a high level.

I said what I said. I said getting him an extended outing allowing him to find his command would benefit us more than letting the guys we know are "inning eaters" throw their bullpens against Nichols.

He's thrown 150 innings of college baseball and hasn't figured it out. He's not gonna figure it out tonight. Best thing to do is make him warm up in the bullpen on the LHP mound so he's forced to bend and quit missing high

At nicholls, this isnt nicholls. We are not going to wait around for a guy to throw strikes consistently who gives away a free pass 2x every 3 outs he has. He has shown time and time again this season he doesnt have the ability to control himself. Every time he goes out there it's multiple free passes. If he has 1 great outing out of 5 thats not going to get him premium time on the mound.
