Yesterday I finished The Leftovers and I have a question (spoilers)...

I digested the final- which I enjoyed. About 55 minutes overall I was concerned, but the last 5 made up for it. I did my usual and looked online for different takes, which is what I did after every episode of LOST. Anyway, people were saying that Nora possibly made up the whole "went over" story. That shocked me, because never did I even consider she might be. I mean, I know they didn't show her journey. But I was mind blown considering the other people were just on Earth when 98% of the population vanished, and they continued on just like our survivors did. Anyway, I just wondered what the general consensus was. I like to think the story was true- I have no idea why she would make it up at that point in time.

I think it was true. And this:
But they did though. Or at least they showed us a scene of what she was talking about...about how she saw them and they were very happy and she realized that in that reality (or whatever) they were the ones that lost her and not the other way around, right? I think I remember glimpses of her seeing her family walking into or out of their house or something like that.
I guess she COULD have been making it up, but that wouldn't really make much sense within the framework of the show and why would she make it up to Kevin? He didn't lose anybody in the departure so he wouldn't have really needed a lie to comfort him about someone leaving.
I watched this show for the first time and finished it up about 6 months ago. I really liked it.

As an audience, I suppose we're supposed to fall in love with Nora, like Garvey did. With that in mind, just imagine how difficult it would have been to maintain the infrastructure with only 2% of the population. Forget how, why? For what purpose?
If we suddenly lost 2% of the population, it would be devastating for a few months, just emotionally, and very little would change. If we lost 98% of the people, suddenly, the remaining 2% would be in a battle for survival. There would be a huge surplus of resources, but virtually no services. No one to keep planes in the air, the power on, nuclear plants from melting down, etc.
Thematically and from the storytelling standpoint, Nora was lying - to herself mostly. She was an expert at sniffing out liars. She knew those quasi-scientist cats were lying, but she wanted to believe their story. And Garvey loves her enough to either believe it or pretend to believe her story. In my mind, there is no way she made it all the way back to her family and then not reunite with them and stay there.
And it doesn't matter, anyway. The show is not about the departed. It is about those left behind.

She made it up.

I thinks it’s pretty evenly split - I’ve always thought she made it up. She backed out of the machine last minute and had to concoct the story to justify her choices and being. She was lying to herself

She lied. And Kevin loved her enough to not care.

Of course she lied.
How the hell did she get back?
The other side was 2% of the population. Who built the device allowing someone to cross?

The guy that crossed over when he built the first one.

The thought didn't occur to me of her lying at the time of watching, but I did think it was very odd.
Years later I still can't decide if she was or not
And I think that ultimately it sort of doesn't matter

No show had me questioning things and even myself than the Leftovers did. Truly a brilliant show that never got stale

I was in season 2 episode 2. Where the lead buys a shovel. I'm the bearded fella in the background.

S1 was awesome. S2 and 3 were much weaker IMO. But I still enjoyed them a lot too. S3 went off the rails here and there with crazy/stupid. But I was all in for the ride.
