Turnabout is fair play I say.....other countries need to drop their tariffs first.

Deceptive thread title is deceptive. He says long term tariffs are bad but they are fine if they are a means to an ends.

Which they are.

So they have nothing to do with "bringing jobs back"?

The Mexico tariff threats were smart and targeted in the first days of the admin. “Liberation Day” is fricking wild, reckless, and stupid.

Bro seriously?

When the other country drops their tariffs and stops manipulating their currency/subsidizing their industries their imports are less competitive and so manufacturing returns.

The willful obtuseness is very tired.

Take it up with the Hoover Institute the thread title is word for word their tweet.

He begrudgingly said fine look at his body language when he said that he then went on to say that the problem here is we don't know if Trump's tariffs are short term or will last for all four years of his presidency and that the uncertainty is going to cause people to hold onto their money.

I wonder if Mr Sowell believes US companies trying to sell their products to foreign nations who add tariffs and VAT to US products entering these foreign nations is good trade policy for the US.

It will happen through lower taxation in the near future. That is the plan. I know you do not agree with the plan and will post hundreds of times with your opinions but we will have to wait and see if the plan works.

Sowell is definitely not a MMT guy but he has always disagreed with Trumps tariff policy.

SFP your economic knowledge is as impressive as your political takes; companies often move their production to other nations to avoid tariffs and reduce costs. If retaliatory tariff threats cause other nations to drop or greatly reduce their tariffs then said businesses could move their production back to the US since said additional costs no longer exist.

He didn’t really refute the effectiveness of tariffs.

He’s saying that the uncertainty with economic policy makes people less likely to spend money.
