Why is there a Negro Head Corner in Arkansas?
Negro Head Corner is an unincorporated community in Woodruff County. It's located about 4 miles north of Augusta on Negro Head Road (Woodruff Co Rd 135)
The area is named for an oak sculpture of a Black man's head that once was displayed at the corner of a 180 acre farm near the crossroads. It was carved by Mr. Wade Antney, who farmed the land first as an enslaved person and then who lived there most of his life as a free man up into his 90s.
When he was younger he had taken his axe to a big oak log, peeled off the bark, and on one end carved a life-sized image of a man's head. He then painted it black and placed it conspicuously in the ground on the corner on his farm.
When the first sculpture decayed, he carved another one and put it into its place. Over time, the community had become known as "N*gger Head Corner", which was largely due to Mr. Antney and his corner post.
Casual visitors to the farming community would often ask, "How could this be?" You are probably asking the same of yourself. And, think about it.. Is it Racist to use the N-word as a fact of geography in the United States?
Well, anyone who knew Mr. Antney knew that he had no malice in his heart against the Black race when he put that post on the corner of his property. For you see, Wade Antney was Black himself. A man who had built his reputation among the slave owners, and had owned the very exact land to which he was once a slave on.
"N*gger Head Corner" still stands today even though the carving isn't still there. It's on the map now as "Negro Head Corner", the politically correct term.

Great story.
PS - not the slave part... the becoming free and owning/farming the land.

And Tom Brannon wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole when he was announcing the towns in the path of the rotation. Just skipped right over it.

I remember listening to Audio of a civil war survivor and hearing him pronounce "negro" as "nigra" and it dawned on me that the verboten ****** term was likely just a linguistic corruption of negro, which simply meant black.

What about if we just use an A for the ending instead of hard R?
