I just recently hired a mid twenties guy doing some research for us and he's been a great hire until this week. You can't make this stuff up and no I'm not a troll, but this guy requests for a mental day off b/c of Val Kilmer's death b/c that was his favorite actor and emotionally couldn't come to work. My instinct says carry your arse, but I also don't want a law suit on my hands. I guess todays world is just different.

Do you offer a mental health day?

If so, let him burn it. Remind him that he has none left.

Does he get PTO or sick time? Guess he could use that (assuming no tight timeline for projects)

This isn’t true whatsoever but if it is and he’s been top notch then just give him the day off and forget about it. Some people are really good workers and have weird hang ups. If he does it again; then eventually tell him to pound sand and find a new guy.

No we have 10 sick days and 10 vacation days. To me this is not being sick!

Does it really matter? Does he need a doctors note?

HR sucks arse and has turned into Karen and Ken's.

Take a PTO day no need to exclaim why. If an explanation is forced on you, oh well move on. A PTO is a PTO.

H R advise
Are you asking for HR advice or advising you are Ken in HR?

If you have time to complain about this, you're fired for sharing personal info. If it is your company, you're an idiot. If this is a troll it isn't even funny.

A PTO is a PTO. If he needs to stay home to apply vagisil, it is what we have become.

He either takes it as a Vacation Day or Sick Day, don't think any further into it. Those are his days to use as he wants, if he chooses to use it as "green grass painting day" it doesn't matter just let him use his days.

So he's been a great hire until he requested a day off?

That's kind of ridiculous regardless of semantics.

Well if he has the leave and is approved to use it (assuming so, but sometimes new employees can't until a probationary period is over), then I don't see the issue.

I'm not sure you can decide whether it's a sick or vacation day (unless you require a doctor note for sick). But if he has the leave then presumably he can use it for whatever he wants. Is it stupid that he claims it's a mental health day for Val Kilmer? Sure. But that shouldn't prevent him from using it IMO.

Louisiana is a right to work state.

Hire a grown-arse adult and don't deal with it is all I can say.

I think mentally ill counts as sick. Count it as a sick day.
