Anyone hearing about Freon being stolen from home ac units? Neighbors ac wasn’t blowing cold air and the repair man showed up and claimed all the Freon was gone (about 20#). Said it must have been stolen because there were no leaks. Wanted $3,000 to refill.

Whole thing sounds suspect af.

20# for $3000!?

This is the real crime occurring!

Kids and addicts cut the lines and huff the stuff. It’s what I’ve been told by HVAC people. They aren’t selling it.

no leaks in the system, so lines were intact.

I have heard of $100 a pound for R12 but not $150 minus labor. Supply and demand is a helluva thing when you are on the wrong side of it.

There are still people out there with ancient systems that require old refrigerant, and the only way to come about it is to buy from an A/C man who captured some when replacing units for other people. It can be like gold.

We’re talking about a unit that’s no older than 2010.

People huff it.

Any drug addicts around?

Could even be a neighbors kid.

Didn’t happen to me but it did happen to a guy I know and his neighbors.

Well, R-22 was still being used then so I am correct. We stopped importing any R-22 systems in 2020 and stopped making R-22 long before then, so R-22 is expensive because it is rare and you can't just buy it. As I said, the only way to get it is when an A/C man changes an old system he captures the R-22. There is basically a black market for it for lack of a better term.

R-22 was phased out for R410A but R410A is being phased out for R-32 as of Dec 31, 2024

Didn’t the govt force the changeover? Like some enviro-bullshite?

I’ve done a lot of shite back in the day but huffing Freon is not one of them.

Take a can of dust off and put a rag over it and take a pull.

Freon is stolen by people to feed to unleashed neighborhood dogs.

One of my teacher’s kids died doing that in the late 80s / early 90s.

Turns out huffing Freon then going to dive into the pool is a really bad combination.

I believe it was cops. But they arrested these two dudes huffing paint.

Was the most pathetic scene of two men I had ever seen in my young life. That’s all I needed to never huff anything.
