Stay on Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye. There are some nice things in the mainland but most of the country is third world. Really third world.

Went to Belize City as a port on a cruise.
We toured the Altun Ha Mayan ruins. Recommend.

A nice hotel there is the Great House Inn. They have an atmospheric bar in a French Quarter style courtyard.

Been to Ambergris Caye. Did a day trip to Caulker

The islands are cool. Good time.

The mainland is VERY third world to say the least.

I enjoyed the mainland and jungle more than the touristy beach areas. Rented a car and drove to san ignacio to stay in the jungle. ATM cave was one of the coolest things I've ever done

Years ago.

We stayed on a barrier island right off the drop off and dove, fished for a week. Was primitive accommodations, but great seafood. Takes a fair boat ride to get there. I corresponded with them a few years ago to show them some old pictures I had. Still there.

Glover's Atoll

Yep. Driving around Belize is fun. I've been to 44 countries, and the ATM cave is a top-5 experience. Other stuff, like Altun-Ha or some of the monkey reserves or the zoo, is cool but not spectacular.

I stayed at the Fort George Hotel back when it was a Radisson, and it was nice and a good base for exploring the mainland.

English is the official language in Belize which makes it easier to communicate there.

I’ve been to two different ruins sites on cruise excursions there. Both were great, but Xunantunich was amazing.

1999 with the military. Total shite hole away from the tourism areas. Beautiful country but extremely poor!

We went to Ambergris Caye and rented a house for a week. I've traveled to a lot of places in the Caribbean so I have a lot of places to compare it with. It was my least favorite place I have been. Very poor, not many good places to eat, etc.

We rented golf carts to get around. That was very convenient and fun but there are a ton of golf carts in town at San Pedro. The beaches on the reef side were below average, with lots of seaweed. Small beaches. On the cove side or inland side, the sea lice sucked. You could feel them the entire time. Bring lots of bug spray. We had two Bluetooth radios disappear at night so I'm guessing someone was coming around at night looking for stuff we left out and we had the private house to ourselves.

If you do decide to go, make sure to buy your liquor before at the airport. Buy extra. We ran out and for one 750 ml bottle of Titos was about $90 in San Pedro. If your plane to Belize City gets delayed, don't feel rushed for the puddle jumper because they just take whoever is there at the time and fill that plane then just put you on the next one. They are non-stop every 20-30 minutes so take your time to buy alcohol at the airport.

The best part was diving for lobster. That was fun and then taking them back and cooking at the house. There is a season for that which opened July 1st so just check before if you want to do that.

I completely agree with this. I liked San Ignacio as well. Placencia is a great destination as well. We loved the jungle areas.

My wife's uncle built a house on an island off of Placencia in Belize. It's beautiful on that island. But don't tarry in Belize City. Get on that puddle jumper flight to the cayes asap.

I don't know how hard it would be, but he's mentioned trying to get dual citizenship down there.

I’ve been once.

Would never go back.

Poverty to the extreme.
