What’s the hype about the job? I’m assuming most of us work in some sort of service related industry, who the hell wants to work in a manufacturing plant? The manufacturing baws of the past worked hard so their kids wouldn’t have to do this shite.

You mean as an operator or as a professional?

Good stable job with great pay. An operator at a refinery/chemical plant will make more money than you with better benefits. You've been brainwashed by Bill Clinton saying we are no longer a manufacturing economy

What kind of manufacturing are you referring? I am a mechanical engineer and have worked in food, household cleaner, hand tool and currently heavy equipment manufacturing facilities for the past 25 years. Most of the time is pretty low stress, with good pay. Even the technicians know their jobs are pretty easy, especially as advancements in technology have made the equipment much more capable and user friendly.

A client of mine has a plant in Tennessee which is having to shutdown profitable manufacturing lines with orders because they cannot find workers at $100k+ a year.

My dad was a plant operator.

I wish I had his job. I tried to get it. He tried to get me in it.

Unfortunately about 4000 others wanted it too.

Somebody has to do it, how would we get the things we need for modern society to work? Besides, working in manufacturing is 10x safer than it used to be.

You sound like an idiot posting a "why doesn't everybody just [blank] then all our problems would be solved" arse comment. Just like some of the blue collar folks who post "everyone just needs to get into the trades." That’s not how the economy works.

I worked as an IT person in several car plants. It was very satisfying to see the work being done and product going out the door.

Most white collar jobs are bullshite jobs. Soul sucking. I currently have one in the insurance industry...where we talk about underwriting, claims, risk, etc. Boring AF.

Someone has to make everything you use. I'm not aware of any magic that would just allow everyone to be influencers and money movers and we all still have stuff.

It’s not bad. All the overtime you want. We cut up and have some fun. Boss doesn’t mind as long as we make him money. Made over $40 million last 2 years and this year is starting off well.

When in college, I got a night job at Poloron Industries, manufacturing Christmas tree stands.

The machine I was chained to was capable of banging out car fenders but this thing was a complete over-kill and each time I simultaneously pressed the two big buttons, that thing came down, crimping out one piece of a 6 part, 4 legged stand.

The stamping part had a cable attached to it that fed through two pullies that in turn was attached to gloves on each hand. making it impossible to get either hand or head crushed.

So, my only stab at manufacturing.

8 hours, bang, place another piece of metal in, press buttons with each hand, and BAM!...again, over and over and over.

I hated that job and at the first break, I went to the door without even clocking out.
