Louisiana voters reject amendment to prosecute more juveniles as adults
March 30, 2025 5:44 PM in News Source: WBRZ By: Jordan Ponzio Share:
BATON ROUGE - Louisiana voters made their voices heard Saturday, rejecting every proposed Constitutional Amendment on the March 29 ballot, including one that could have changed which juvenile offenders get prosecuted as adults.

Proposed Amendment 3 would have granted the legislature the authority to determine which felony crimes committed by individuals under 17 could be transferred for prosecution as an adult.

Voters were asked to remove the existing list of crimes from the state Constitution, allowing lawmakers to more easily expand the offenses that could result in juveniles being charged as adults.

"You can't put lipstick on a pig and tell us it's a dog. A pig is a pig and that's what we saw, we saw it for what it was. The people spoke, this was a bipartisan vote that says those amendments were not in favor of moving Louisiana forward," Dist. 5 Metro Councilmember Darryl Hurst said. "We're taking youth that are 12 years old and above and we're holding them in the juvenile detention centers until they're 17. So, we're taking away a kid's entire childhood so we can try them as an adult."

Hurst, who is an advocate for the juvenile justice system, said the proposed changes were not going to solve the state's problems.

“Instead of putting programs and services and focus on taking people from poverty, we want to lock the kids up for life," Hurst said. "What I see is that, we're so scared of young black kids that we would rather lock them up than deal with them. That's what this says to me."

He said he's pleased with how the state came together to do what's right.

Obviously because they don’t want to see kids tried as adults. How is that confusing?

Because a good number of Dems were told to vote against it and enough of the right are full blow reactionary at the moment and opposed to everything in principle.

So a 15 year old that murders 4 year old in cold blood deserves different treatment?

They’ll get out at 17 and kill more people. Happens pretty frequently

You want to see some real monsters? Put a 14 year old into an adult prison.

Because Landry has a huge PR problem

He thinks he’s Trump but he’s not even Jindal

He only won because he wasn’t a democrat.

He handled the roll out of these amendment propositions about as worse as one could

Here’s the thing…I have for 15 years now been an advocate, even within the walls of the Louisiana Capitol, fighting against legislators proposing bills to do away with trying teens as adults and against bills to retroactively let out those free who were given life without parole for horrendous murders.

That said, the State Legislature and the Governor needs to grow a pair and do this legislatively and put their names on a vote.

Also, to put this out in an election that already featured a controversial amendment in No 2 was more cowardly.

Maybe if they worded the amendments where the common man could understand them better.

The better question is why the frick are we having elections in March?

Also, if the amendments weren’t worded in a such a way that no sane person can understand them in a single reading, they deserve to get voted down.

We have the worst legislature ever.

Perhaps they shouldn't be voting at all if they can't comprehend such simple concept...
