“The zone has shrunk tonight.” (Baseball umpiring)

Baseball purists think this is actually ok, and even a good thing for the game
The old guard dumbass baseball fans will never get out of their own way. Hopefully the new fans will actually be ok with making the game officiating more accurate.

I could rant about this but I think the game lost itself when it stopped policing itself.

I despise human umpires. I’ve been ready for computer umps since the Atari.
F the fat bastards.

Ahh. You’re one of those “unwritten rules” people??
That may be worse than the purists

Call the damn strike zone as it is written, or get replaced by someone (or something) that will.

If they ever go to Ai umps, it will hurt offensive production. The by the book strike is much larger than what human umps call. Although human umps can still have some crazy strikes zones. So what I'm saying is I need some fishsticks.

What will make a difference is batters knowing exactly where a strike is and not feeling compelled to swing with 2 strikes at something outside because blue is being a clown that day

The technical strike zone is much larger than what any ump calls today.

I bounce back and forth between the two sides on this. I do get where the purists are coming from, but hate seeing my team being continually hosed by some dumb arse ump. I land on the Human Umpire side just because I do like the imperfect, romantic side of baseball.

What does Greg Maddux’s career look like with robo umps? He made a career out of slowly getting the ump to make calls 6” off the plate

^This. I hate when I hear umpires say "my strike zone is so md so". It's not "your strike zone" its the strike zone.
ETA: I also hate the old "he's a rookie so he's not going to get that call or as wide of a strike zone". What kind of shite is this?

Only high to low.

I’m a baseball purist and don’t have a problem with electronic aids for calling balls and strikes. The problem is that even if it’s a robot calling balls and strikes, people will still bitch if a call goes against their team because that’s what fans do.
They can’t accept that s**t happens in sports and sometimes your team is going to fail or lose even if they’re “superior” or “better” than an opponent, so they have to look for excuses for why what they think should have happened didn’t, like the officiating.
I don’t romanticize the human element in the game. I romanticize the fact that there’s always uncertainty in how things turn out and that the unexpected can happen and, above all, that the greatest baseball players fail literally 65% of the time.

It’s likely to be wayyyyy less bitching after a while though if it’s called accurately. Only idiots are going to argue that going forward.

And fans watching 1,000 miles away on TV are supposed to be the ultimate judges of what’s accurate …

You think giving Maddux another 4"-5" on the top of the strike zone wouldn't help him? The total area to work with would remain about the same and he was a master of speed and location control.

Delusional

Perfection will work just fine
