I don’t know if it’s because I’m growing up but Indie music from the 2000s/2010s was peak. I miss music like that.

With the Napster et al downloading era, I engorged myself with indie music during the time mentioned. Looking back now, most of it was very overrated. That isn’t to say that I disagree with the thread’s premise because there was some great music released by indie bands then, but I got completely over saturated.

In the old days wimps, nerds, & sociopaths formed rock bands to compete w/the jocks for girls
Today why should they bother, when the girls are into rap & EDM?
And the R&R audience shrinks further every day.
Rap has several advantages over R&R. Why "get yourself an electric guitar, and take some time and learn how to play", as The Byrds sang, when you can simply stand up and rap?
And R&R is like an orgy - you need several people to do it.
Rap = The Great Folk Music Scare: one sensitive artiste is all you need.

Pretty much nailed it. Rock just isn't cool these days. Or innovative. The most cutting edge stuff is happening from behind a laptop. You can argue whether that's right or wrong, but it's just a fact.

A few exceptions don't prove the rule.

Car Seat Headrest just put out a great new single. Then you have IDLES, Dr.Dog, The Murlocs, Hermanos Gutierrez, Mk.gee, Fontaines D.C., Amyl and the Sniffers, Two Gallants, Rose City Band...and then a ton of solo artists too. I feel like there are actually more small time, small lable acts out there now because of the Spotify effect.

A silly man painted black prancing around the stage drunk like a Christian Marilyn Manson isn’t cool with kids these days.
I like them though.

We've just moved further and further from the age of strong albums being a thing. So not only is rock completely out of style, as Kafka said very well, but a lot of these bands are just hoping to have a single song hit.
And there are definitely some GREAT new songs out there! If I play something indie on Tidal and leave it on, it just keeps playing random indie shite. A lot of it is new and, while I couldn't tell you many of the band names, it's an enjoyable listen.
I think another shift in indie is the move to female vocalists. Female vocalists aren't for everyone, not to mention the lyrics are often from a woman's perspective. You aren't going to hear Chad scream out his frat house window to Chet, "yo, Chet, you hear that new Soccer Mommy?!? shite hits hard!".

Damn. I am jealous and you must live in a big city. Bill Callhan just put out a tribute song to Norm McDonald:

Tons of them in my neighborhood. Silverlake (Los Angeles) I can’t even keep track there are so many. That’s why don’t really hear of “great ones”. It’s kind of watered down by the sheer volume these days. Gotta do the work to find the ones you like
