DOJ considers abandoning the defense of federal restrictions on silencers

CNN link, sorry about that

The Justice Department has defended the law for decades, arguing that it doesn’t ban silencers but simply governs how a buyer can acquire one. Still, late last week, prosecutors requested a 30-day pause in the criminal case against a firearms dealer found with an unregistered silencer because “the Department of Justice is re-evaluating its litigation positions regarding silencers.”

The review is one of the efforts undertaken by DOJ since Trump ordered the federal government to re-evaluate its gun policies and tasked Attorney General Pam Bondi with re-evaluating all ongoing litigation that could restrict Americans’ gun rights.

Would be super groovy as I am in the market and would like for it to be an easy transaction that costs $200 cheaper.

I really wish that they'd stop calling them silencers, it makes people think that there's no noise. Outside of a .22 they're still pretty damn loud even with a suppressor attached.

Glad they are moving in this direction, in a few countries they even encourage the use of them to limit hearing damage and noise pollution.

quote:

Gun safety groups, for their part, say that silencers put people at risk by make a mass shooting harder to hear and contend that because silencers reduce the recoil when a gun is fired, it could make it easier for a gunman with a semiautomatic to shoot with fewer interruptions.

“Silencers in the wrong hands create serious public safety risks,” Everytown for Gun Safety writes on their website. “The loud and distinctive noise that a gun makes is one of its most important safety features: when people hear it, they realize they may need to run, hide, or protect others.”

It's almost hilarious how intentionally wrong and clearly uninformed some of the anti gun groups are.

Good. You can make an argument for the regulation of machine guns and destructive devices (although I wouldn't agree with it), but the regulation of Suppressors and SBRs is retarded.

Yep. It's bad marketing that even the gun advocates have bought into.

Don't leave Silencer Central out of the mix

I have a DD MK18 SBR with a Dead Air suppressor. It took over a year to process the tax stamp on both and I have to make sure I have a copy of the damn tax stamps everywhere I go with the rifle. Why? Because it’s a tad shorter than the arbitrary law allows for rifles

Having to pay an NFA fee for suppressors is dumb.

Come on guys, you know gangbangers and other criminals are going to buy these things and start shooting folks without it making a noise, so no one knows where the bullets are coming from... Also, I have it on good authority that silencers can give a common bullet the ability to penetrate a plate and concrete... Can you imaging the horrors of gun violence that would be unleashed if everyone was allowed to buy these things over the counter, instead of making them or purchasing on the black market?

This is how to appease the morons. Change terminology and say "silencers" are regulated by NFA, but sound suppressors are no longer restricted. Then idiots can feel like they won and the rest of us can enjoy 100% of suppressors on the market.

On one hand, suppressors being NFA is dumb, really dumb

On the other, how am I supposed to flex on the poors if they're all in the suppressor game now

You can still dump on their PSA carbines and Turkish Benelli knockoffs.
