When we got him out of the portal I know people on here were excited for him to come and compete at catcher and at least dh or play somewhere on the infield at times..he hasn't gotten in a single game?

Was he that bad in the off-season?

I remember seeing his stats and they weren't pretty this off season but was it just the eye test too or something? Guys look bad in the off season alot but usually end up getting a chance to have some abs

He fell to the #4 guy at Catcher, which usually doesn't equate to much PT. Even Priester at #3 rarely plays, who had a great Fall but bad early Spring.

Yamin can also play 1B, but that's not needed. I would still think he should be ahead of Costello, but Larson or Brown would get a crack at 1st before Yamin if Bear had an injury.

He can also play OF or DH, but those rooms are crowded. On any given day, you can only start 4 of Stanfield, Curiel, Js. Pearson, Brown, Frey, and Larson.

Still, I'm surprised he hasn't had any real look during a game. Frey getting healthy and improving this year didn't help his cause, and neither did Reaves having success at the plate, or Jn Pearson showing good offensive flashes.

Thought that had to be decided prior to the start of the season?

Decided? If he plays in a game he is not eligible to be red shirted, if he does then he is red shirted.

Are you sure? Never know around here since the typical TD poster just states things as fact when they really have no idea

I could be wrong but I had thought in baseball you had to pre-determine your redshirts prior to the start of the season

So if a player isn't "declared" as a red shirt, but plays 0 innings, they will return as a sophomore? I don't think that's accurate.

I feel bad for a couple of these guys who were everyday starters at prior schools and now can't get on the field for LSU, but I guess that is the nature of the business now.

You do not have to declare a redshirt

Some teams do so it’s clear but it’s not required

In related news, rules need to be updated to allow for some playing time like they have in football. last night would be perfect for an AB

The guys you see pre determined as redshirts are the guys that are not on the roster for the season due to roster size limit. This year the roster limit was met when Deven Sheerin got injured. That got the roster number to 40 so nobody else needed to pre determine a redshirt to make the roster limit.

Guys that do not play at all even though on the roster can and will get a redshirt.

Yamin is redshirting, he basically wasnt going to play this year being so far down the depth charts at C/1B/OF so better off to redshirt and preserve 2 more years of eligibility for him.

He was a bit of a bloomer last season because his freshman year wasnt good, so he still is probably figuring things out.

I will say usually these types just end up transferring from here, but not everyone is ready right away either so he could become a contributor next season after a number of guys leave between the OF, Jones at 1B and Hernandez at C.
