American Honda will procure batteries for its hybrid vehicles from Toyota Motor North America’s new $13.9 billion battery complex coming online in Liberty, N.C., Japan’s Nikkei news service reported March 17.

According to a new Nikkei report, starting in fiscal 2025, Toyota will supply batteries for the roughly 400,000 Honda hybrids sold in the US.

A 25% tariff on Japanese vehicles, up from 2.5% currently, is estimated to cost the six major Japanese automakers about $20 billion in the US.
Tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada could cost Honda roughly $4.7 billion alone. Teaming up with Toyota to use its batteries for its hybrids is part of Japan’s broader global plans to ween off dependence on China and others for batteries and other emerging tech.

The new US plant, Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina (TBMC), is over seven million square feet, or about the size of 121 football fields.

The broader auto industry is also adjusting supply chains in response to shifting U.S. trade policies. For instance, General Motors recently scaled back EV production at its northern Mexico plant, while Stellantis suspended operations at its Ontario facility and reopened a closed factory in Illinois to manufacture midsize pickup trucks.

Japanese, Korean, and European automakers are going to feast on the backs of American giants.

Wait until they list the volume of batteries as 1.21 fricktons per year.

Good news.
Toyota and Honda again continue to excel at what they do.
The German cars on the other hand.

Workaround is apparently an euphemism for planned outcome because that is the desired outcome...more productivity on American soil.

I'm shocked.....I've been told here and by credible national media sources that those jerbs would never come back and we'd all just pay more for cars.
In reality, what this shows is that global companies are used to working with things like tariffs because EVERY NATION ON THE PLANET HAS THEM EXCEPT US. They are easily manipulated by a government with a clue. Glad we finally have one.
Honda sources TBMC, who adds a shift employing more Americans, GM shuffles production from a Canuck plant to a US plant, again employing more Americans. Stellantis has to figure out how to squeeze production into a US plant that was going to be sent to Mexico. Guarantee you VW is burning midnight oil on shuffling production from Mexico to its US plants too. The common thread to all of these is more Americans get paid, more Capex is made here, and more taxes are paid.

And just like that, US business improves because of Trump and his tariffs.

Exactly my thought...hardly a workaround. This is the whole point of tariffs...creating jobs and wealth for American workers. Whether Honda employees produce them or Toyota employees produce them and sell to Honda it's a win for

ETA: And also results in less shipping of massive loads of super heavy automotive inputs across the globe, reducing the carbon footprint...the enviro whackos should applaud this.

and also the mass deportations.
All those government workers getting laid off will now have plenty of available jobs.

Exactly. This is the effect of a strategic decision. Good news.

I like VWs plan better. They'll send you to the VW plant in Sweden, pay for two weeks in a hotel and then sell you your car "used" to avoid tariffs. Then they'll ship it to the US.

Just keep the union's grubby paws out of it.
