Looking to take the kids to the Caribbean this summer. Any recommendations of where to go?

We were looking at Atlantis at first, but i don't want to be nickel and dimed for every little thing we do. I also am not looking to break the bank, but i do not have any reference point to how much a vacation should cost. I want the kids to experience some cool stuff, like snorkeling, maybe horseback riding, lazy river/float trip through the forests, etc...

Roatan or Costa Rica are easy. Costa Rica is probably a bit more adventurous, with zip line tours in the jungle, etc. Roatan is more drink/snorkel/relax, but you can rent a home with a pool and a dock for not a lot. I think the house we rented in Roatan was 2k for the week.

GF (no pics) and I are looking at taking our 2 kids here this summer. All-inclusive and kids stay free. It's on the beach but also has it's own water park. Best of both worlds when it comes to kids, IMO.

The "kids stay free" part may only be with some select packages. I'm just going based off what the gf told me when we first started looking at it.

The Atlantis is a nice place to go with kids. If you eat your meals there and buy snacks, drinks or do their activities you have to pay for it is very expensive. The last couple of times we went there we went into Nassau to eat at night. You can walk across the main bridge off Paradise Island to do that or catch a cab to downtown. We also went to a grocery store and stocked up on snack foods and drinks. Almost everything in the Bahamas is imported so groceries are expensive too but not like buying it at the Atlantis.

Then I will suggest something different. Rent a power cat in the BVI with (or without) a captain and spend a week going to different islands. It's a fantastic experience for kids.

I would love to do this, but never considered it with the kids. What kind of activities do you do on the islands outside of snorkeling/scuba that is kid friendly?

We are doing the Beaches resort on Turks and Caicos. Its designed for families and all inclusive, so no nickel and diming.

It's also all inclusive, so...its not exactly super adventurous. But snorkeling, scuba classes, water parks, etc.

Water sports is the main attraction. On Virgin Gorda your kids can explore The Baths with you which are cool rock formations to walk through and climb on a little.

Do those two things line up? The only family I know that goes every year is mid-high six figures in annual income.

Yeah, I know Beaches is pretty expensive but, then again, so is what I suggested.

Well we don't go every year.

Beaches Jamaica is certainly cheaper though, if OP was interested in the Beaches resorts.

We just don't like Jamaica.

You've already had Roatan suggested, and I would second that. A couple of days on Half-Moon Bay there would blow their minds (and yours, if you seeing squid, turtles, stingrays and all kinds of beautiful fish and coral isn't routine).

I've heard that the snorkeling in Barbados from the area near the Hilton is also pretty epic, and Barbados has a lot of other interesting things to do. Otherwise, Cozumel is another really solid choice.

we stayed at an Airbnb on Harbour Island in the bahamas with our boys last summer. They are the same age as yours. Empty beaches, golf cart cruising, did some fishing and swam with pigs, horseback riding on the beach, etc. They loved it.

I think roatan would be a cool trip.

Also curacao is a great option.

I'd suggest looking into resorts in the Dominican Republic or Jamaica. They often have all-inclusive options, which can help with the nickel-and-diming thing. Plus, they usually have a ton of activities for kids, like snorkeling, water parks, and stuff like that. You might also want to check out some of the smaller islands like Turks and Caicos

For something that's quality but affordable, I can recommend the Hilton La Romana in the DR. It's very nice but not overpriced, on a great beach (with no sargassum), with a waterpark and lots of kids activities, and has great snorkeling excursions. I was there three years ago for 3 nights and really enjoyed it.

Thanks for all the recommendations, i'll look into those.

I keep going back to Atlantis, with the pools/water parks included if you stay at the resort, but i've also heard that place can get very expensive.

If it was up to just me, i'd go to the springs resort in costa rica, with the rainforests, pools, ziplining, etc... but it's not on the beach and that is the draw for my wife.

Roatan and Turks and Cacos are moving up on my list though.
