Do you allow your kids to have screens in their rooms?

My almost 13-year-old son says he’s the only kid in his middle school who doesn’t have a smartphone (he has an iPad at home). He also claims no other kid has a no-screens-in-your-room policy. I find this hard to believe based on my discussions with other parents. Is he lying to me or am I running an exceptionally tight ship?

I don't even allow my kids to have rooms. They have to sleep in the yard like feral animals and fight over the one blanket I allow them.

We didn’t use screens, we put bars on the windows to keep them from sneaking out.

I believe that.

Nazi. My world at 13 was 99% me in my room with my arm about to fall off.

I’d actually be mildly proud to find out that he snuck out at night to run around the neighborhood with his friends. Of course, at this rate he might just sneak into their house to watch YouTube shorts with them. This generation…

I only have little kids but the answer is and shall always be a big fat NO

We have one entertainment screen in our house, and that’s the living room TV. Bah, humbug.

I’m not changing my stance or looking for approval. Just curious if he’s being dramatic here.

Imagination means intercepting the Sears swimsuit issue at the mailbox where I come from.

I look at it from a different point of view. We didnt have cell phones or iPads when we were younger and we ended up turning out pretty damn well if I may say so. It’s the damn, well they do , attitude that has gotten everyone into trouble. Trying to keep up with what John and sally are allowed to do gets you where you don’t have to be.

Good call. Mine put in a wired alarm system and my buddy taught me how to close the wiring circuit in the attic so my window was "always" closed.

Your kid isn’t being dramatic. Times change with generations. You can’t raise your kids exactly the way you were raised otherwise they will be behind.

Our kids are exposed to technology in a daily basis but they enjoy being outside as well. Balance it.

Maybe. Maybe not. Have you ever fully taken away your kids’ devices and watched the difference in them? A little boredom isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

When I was a kid I had friends who had TVs in room, and I didn’t. I also got my phone taken away at night before I went to bed. I’ll absolutely make sure my kids have the same expectations. Parents need to do their kids the FAVOR of being bored and learning how to come up with fun ways to pass the time. Handing them a device that feeds them a steady stream of dopamine while inhibiting their original creativity is doing them a disservice in the long run. Take your kids’ devices—better yet, don’t give them to them in the first place.

A yard? A blanket? Luxury.

Mine have to sleep in the road with a burlap sack full of of broken glass and lye their only comfort.

Boredom is great!! Send them outside and let them explore the natural world. Or, give them things to build or create while they’re inside. Smart devices make us dumber and fuel anxiety. Giving kids access to screens 24/7 doesn’t give them any break from that.

Behind with what? Goofing off on their phone?
