Truck driving jobs - a good target for Trump
Posted on 3/15/25 at 11:09 am

The recent crash in Austin that killed some people illustrates a problem that Trump should address immediately. Seems like a good opportunity to put more Americans to work and make our roads safer. This is a potential win for him. The post on X speaks for itself, here is the text:
ATU has confirmed: the driver behind today’s horrific Austin, TX crash—killing 5 and injuring 11—barely spoke English. Experts say he was almost certainly on a Non-Domicile CDL. Special interest groups have flooded our roads with unvetted, unqualified, untrained drivers, endangering us all!
DEMAND AN IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION into this driver’s licensing, vetting, and training—or lack thereof!
MORE CRITICALLY, LAUNCH A NATIONAL PROBE into the entities allowing illiterate, ill-trained operators onto our highways!
RESTORE SAFETY, SECURITY, AND INTEGRITY TO OUR ROADS—ACT NOW BEFORE MORE LIVES ARE LOST!

Truck driving isn't a sexy job but theres a lot of open positions for it. Its also a serious issue. Most truck drivers are in their 50s now, when they retire its going to grind our entire economy to a halt

This deadly crash, the Haitian going the wrong way on the Causeway, and on and on. Keep the illegals from getting behind the wheel of any vehicle.

Driverless cargo trucks will be replacing them by then.

Tell these companies they get no govt contracts and no entry onto govt property if they engage in these shady hiring programs, and magically, we'll see more American truckers and safer roads.
Here are some comments on X:
- CDL training for Refugees. 501c3 ( of course )
Global Impact Initiative (Gii) has developed relationships with over 250 Austin-based refugee families from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine with the aim of facilitating their incorporation into the local community. More than 60% of the adults have little or no ability in English, and over 80% are not sufficiently fluent to qualify for jobs or training for positions that pay a living wage. Although many come with job skills from their home country, they do not hold certifications allowing them to work in Austin in such in-demand occupations as commercial truck driving or health care.

- In Minnesota we have a horrible practice of giving cdl licenses without testing if the test center can’t accommodate the drivers first language, pushing off testing until renewal. Illinois will reciprocate these licenses and assume the testing occurred, California will accept the Illinois renewal without secondary identification meaning after assuming Illinois residency you can sell the cdl return to Minnesota and start again. It’s a chronic problem. These aren’t stolen identities they are created identities and after you buy a Californian trafficked identity you can even transport hazardous materials without ever proving you are who you say you are.
American truck drivers invest thousands for the right to drive and are watching this practice increase scrutiny of their driving, reduce load availability, and depression of their wages. Knowing one mistake and they never drive again, whereas this guy can go to California and buy a new cdl identity.
- Looks like an @amazon
load. One of the worst when it comes to putting foreign nationals on our roads.
- I'm in Austin. That section of highway is flat and straight. It boggles my mind how this could happen.
A truck driver in my family recently told me they are coming on H2B VISAS. Companies bring them in, pay them $14 an hour and house them. Supposedly because we have a shortage of cdl drivers.
- "The driver of a tractor-trailer that was involved in a fatal crash late Thursday on Interstate 35 in North Austin has been arrested and booked into the Travis County Jail on five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two charges of intoxication assault, according to the Austin Police Department and jail records."
LINK
"Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, had been detained amid the ongoing investigation into the multi-vehicle collision that occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. on southbound I-35 near Parmer Lane. The crash killed five people, including an infant and a child, and injured at least a dozen others."

This would be a disaster in terms of our economy and public safety. If that "system" gets hacked, nothing gets delivered. Additionally, vehicles can be driven into schools, nuclear facilities, into oncoming traffic, etc and there would be no way to stop them.

You have to go after the companies that hire them. Sue them out of existence. Cease assets.

Safety? No. The opposite, especially as more driverless cars are on the road (especially if they're using the same system/standards).

Driverless trucks wont be hitting the road in time. You still need people to load and unload them, and to secure the cargo with ratchet straps etc. Technology is improving quickly but its ridiculous to believe we will have the means to automate all of that within the next 10 years

Yes this is a tragedy may the souls RIP . Why are refugees always targeted when a disaster happens but our own people do the exact same thing .

What’s the big deal about literacy and driving? “Ill-trained” i can understand, but why would we implement literacy training?

Was he or was he not? There is no expertise in speculation.

These people come here and drive like they do in their shithole countries. Basically no regard for safety of the road or fellow drivers. Want to get drunk in the middle of 1200 mile haul going down I-35 mock Jesus on a Saturday? Sure. Pull over at a rest stop and shite in the McDonalds parking lot? Absolutely. Toss out your trash out on side of the ride? Why even ask? Check your load and do a walk through? wtf is that?

During my travels across some of the most remote parts of the Mountain west I often have no choice but to stop at small truck stops.
I’m always amazed at the sheer number of non English speakers driving these rigs.
Old Eastern block, Muslim, were especially shocking.

They are like Patels and hotels, especially on the West Coast from what I've heard.
They found an industry and targeted it fully and took it over.

At one point the geniuses in D.C. wanted to let foreign drivers coming from Mexico use their foreign rigs to drive all over the country, as well as in and out of Canada.
If you think it is bad now just wait and see if that scenario happens how bad it gets.

Like many here on tPT, I deal directly with deliveries on a frequent basis. At least once or twice a week it's part of my duties to receive shipments, take care of bills of lading, inspect deliveries, etc .
I can 100% confirm that many tractor/trailer CDL guys can't speak a damn lick of English any more. It's nothing new to see foreign drivers, because back in the late 90s and 2000s I started seeing a bunch of muzzy and dot Indian drivers, but they usually always spoke English more than well enough to communicate effectively.
And it isn't just communication that is suffering. Road etiquette among truckers used to be very high. For being kings of the road, they were still very defensive-minded drivers and very patient even when it wasn't deserved. Today, these new school guys just don't give a shite about anyone else on the road. I used to look forward to a 14-hour jaunt heading west on 40 but not any more. Last year I almost died when some dude hauling onions decided to stand on his brakes for no reason on the east side of the Albuquerque mountain.
