And he got to the NIT his first two years but they have higher standards so they fired him. Meanwhile, the McMen think a .500 record in yr 4 would be growth.

On what planet would you fire a coach named Neptune?!

This is true.

54-47 in 3 seasons, 0 NCAAT appearances
19-14 this year with the leading scorer in the Nation this year

MM: 45-53 in 3 seasons, 0 NCAAT appearances
14-18 this year

Surprised they put up with it this long.

Still have bad memories of 2018 Villanova.

I realize they have higher standards now, but Wright wasn't very good his first 3 seasons, and even Lappas got a decade before getting fired.

Just saying this move is a little surprising since Villanova rarely changes coaches, and Neptune was on staff for their glory years.

Wright's last game was in the Final 4. Whoever followed him was up against it and clearly falling off like they did wasn't gonna keep you around long.

Wright had the program consistently in the top 10 and one of the two best Big East teams, year in and year out.

He made the tournament 16 of 17 years. Neptune went 0 for 3.

I guarantee if Scheyer went barely above .500 in his first three years, he would be led go. Wright had Villanova at a consistently elite level.

You should be more upset over the elite eight game in ‘16. I honestly believe that Kansas was the better team. They just wilted in the final five minutes.

I understand that. Not saying his firing wasn't justified. I'm just saying they had 3 coaches in 50 years before Neptune. We've never seen them pull the trigger on someone so quickly before, so I was just a little surprised to see them actually do it.

Now what’s been different the past few years that wasn’t around for Wright…?

The non-big football basketball schools are probably gonna start struggling in the NIL era

I’d think the opposite, they can go all in for basketball

Because lsu simply doesn’t care about men’s basketball.

It hasn’t really happened though.

Creighton is the same as before. UConn (getting minimal football money and not in a football conference) has won the past two national titles. Pitino has St. John’s playing their best basketball since the days of Ron Artest and Erick Barckley.

Georgetown has fallen off but that was well before NIL, and they may be back with their hire of Ed Cooley.

Butler is back down to earth but that is not from NIL, but because hiring the next Brad Stevens is not a feasible strategy.

Villanova went with youth and a coach who knew the program well. Sometimes it works (Scheyer at Duke), sometimes it’s a mixed bag (Hubert Davis at UNC, older as the head man, but young when he joined UNC), and sometimes it fails.
