The Tampa Bay Rays, citing hurricanes and costly delays, will not proceed with the development of a $1.3 billion baseball stadium in St. Petersburg, Florida, principal owner Stuart Sternberg said Thursday.

"After careful deliberation, we have concluded we cannot move forward with the new ballpark and development project at this moment," Sternberg said in a statement. "A series of events beginning in October that no one could have anticipated led to this difficult decision.

"Our commitment to the vitality and success of the Rays organization is unwavering. We continue to focus on finding a ballpark solution that serves the best interests of our region, Major League Baseball, and our organization."

Sternberg said Thursday that the City of St. Petersburg is advancing on plans to restore Tropicana Field in time for the 2026 season.

"We are thankful for their efforts and are excited to return to our home field next spring," Sternberg said.

Major League Baseball should not exist in Florida outside of spring training

I went to a few Marlins games and it was depressing

I would not be so sure they are moving. Tampa Bay is the 11th biggest TV market. Manfred seems to want a team in the area. There are a few local groups trying to buy the team. The other owner's want Stu out because he sucks all the money out of the team via revenue sharing. There was a big article about it in the Athletic a couple days ago.

The current attendance issues are due to the location of the stadium. The team has by far the lowest population living within a 30 minute drive time in the MLB because it's built on the tip of a peninsula. It's not an economic issue, its a geographic/geometric issue.

This stadium proposal was a huge dud because it did not fix that as the stadium was in the same location. The only reason Stu was going for it was because it gave him development rights that were worth more than the team.

They may not get 1,000 in the seats this year during those afternoon games during the summer.

If they are going to have revenue sharing there should be a minimum payroll. Looking at you pirates A's rays and marlins.

When it came out a few days ago they were pressuring him to sell, one of the interested groups was vocal about pursuing this deal if they acquired the franchise. Then this comes out that the current ownership is not moving forward with it.

Maybe I’m wrong but I think it’s obvious MLB/the other owners are trying to force a sale to that group which would revive this stadium deal and keep the team there

Hardly anyone living in the east side of the bay is making that drive for a weekday game. Maybe on the weekend when you might have other stuff going on in that area, but no one in the Tampa area and east likes that drive. Period.

Who should be pressured more to sell: the Rays, or the A's?
