Will be staying in Rome at the beginning of May for 5 days. Have several tours of the Vatican planned. If the Pope passes away does it shut down the tour side? I am assuming Yes it does. Any insight is appreciated.

Don’t plan on going to the Sistine Chapel unless you are a member of the College of Cardinals.

Sistine Chapel is beautiful but St Pete’s is sublime.

Yes, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, as well as official tours, would likely be closed during the period of the Pope's death and the subsequent conclave, while the Basilica would remain open for Masses and limited access

We were there in 2013 when Pope Benedict resigned. We were able to still tour the Vatican but was unable to see the Sistine Chapel as it was being setup for the Conclave. Not sure if a death vs resignation would be any different but assuming the money the Church makes from tours, they wouldn't stop tours from happening. Pope Francis was elected while we were in Venice a week or so later.

I booked a private tour through Viator and it might have been the one on one tour but our tour guide was a local. Because of her credentials as a citizen we never waited in line or had to fight with big groups.
That doesn’t help your pope death question. I have no idea what happens.

We had a similar experience in Venice. Our tour guide was Venetian, which yielded us all sorts of perks throughout the tour.

I've used Viator in Poland, as well. Even in a group tour, it was very personal, and the places the guide took us weren't anywhere on Tripadvisor (pub crawl.) I don't know that they really have a vehicle to hire people that aren't local; it seems like Viator publishes a schedule and lets guides sign up for slots as they feel like they can work.

Did a private tour at the Vatican last summer through Viator as well. It’s worth every last penny. Those guides know how to move through efficiently and get around the hordes. Also not sure if it’s still open but she took us into this underground area where they had the history of pope carriages, cars, and yes pope mobiles. There was no one down there and it was really cool to see. That area is open to anyone so don’t need a guide to see it but we wouldn’t have known about it.
