I’m going to Louisville/Lexington area in April and will have some time to visit a couple of distilleries.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I drink a multitude of bourbons but would just like to visit the coolest distilleries.

Buffalo Trace obviously
Old Forester was really nice. Our kids came with us. My son got to burn a barrel. They had goldfish and water while we were doing the tastings.
Heard 4 Roses is great
Bardstown is one that I would like to do.

We go annually. Angel's Envy is my favorite.

Buffalo Trace is an obvious choice.
Makers is fun if you pay to customize your bottle.
Wild Turkey is a fun one as well.

I’ve toured most of them, BT, OF, HH are all great. Makers is fantastic, one of the more beautiful properties. 4Roses was the weakest one in my opinion, wasn’t impressed. Woodford wasn't that great either. Jim was good as well.

You can easily spend a day just on whiskey row in Louisville. Pearless, Michters (they had a cool bar), the Evan Williams experience, Old Forester, and I think angels envy are all walkable

Excellent input baws, cheers.

Buffalo Trace had the best tour with 4 Roses being the worst by far. While out toward Frankfurt for Buffalo Trace I highly recommend stopping at Whiskey Thief. Very laid back atmosphere where you get to taste straight from the barrel & can fill your own bottle. Rabbit Hole downtown was pretty cool. We also enjoyed the Evan Williams experience downtown where you go to the speakeasy in the basement. If you do that, they'll let you buy a bottle of Evan Williams 12 year in the gift shop.

Find out what/who is doing drops on those days…

My wife and I did the trail in October. We stayed on street off Whiskey Row and walked to most of the distilleries that are in that area. I enjoyed all of those with Old Forester being my favorite.
We did day trips to Bardstown and Frankfort to see Wild Turkey, Buffalo Trace, Whiskey Thief, Lux Row, and Jim Beam.
The Buffalo Trace tour was best we went on. We just walked up that morning and they had some available. You can also shop in the gift shop to see what allocated bottles they have that day. Another cool place is Peerless. It’s walking distance off Whiskey Row and worth your time. We met the owner, Corky, and he had some interesting stories . We also got to dump a barrel of their double oak which was pretty cool.
One thing that we really enjoyed was the tour of the Kentucky cooperage. It’s cool to see how barrels are built , charred , and sent back once they are emptied. It was a great trip .

Michter’s Ft Nelson Distillery in Louisville is awesome. Then go get dinner at La Bodeguita De Mima.
Buffalo Trace is great and there is a good brewery down the street called Goodwood.
Woodford is nice but it’s a little past Frankfort in Versailles's

Buffalo Trace & Makers Mark were my wife & I's favorite. Just loved the location / scenery of the more "off the beaten path" distilleries. Honestly, from a bourbon lover... after 3-4, they are all the same as far as processes & bourbon - you are enjoying the grounds and experience.
Don't discount an afternoon with a tour, bourbon & sitting at Churchill Downs for a couple small races if scheduling works out. Went for bourbon trail and this may have been our favorite part!

Frankfort area
Buffalo Trace is neat, beautiful, and cool history
Castle and Key just up the road a few minutes is well worth it.
That same road has Glens Creek, and Woodford.
Wild Turkey not far from Woodford is not that impressive as beauty goes but you have a shot of meeting Jimmy Russell
Not far from that is Four Roses

Glad you mentioned that. We stopped at Churchill Downs for a tour and enjoyed that quite a bit.
Another place to stop is Evergreen liquors . They have just about anything you could want and have pours available of some rare bourbons.

One of the highlights from our trip was a speakeasy in Louisville called Hell or high water. It’s behind Hotel Distel. You will have to make reservations. Extremely cool vibe and relaxing music. We were seated downstairs in the library. The wives sat on a chaise lounge and my BIL and I had leather chairs. Comfortable and relaxing. Since it’s limited seating you’re not packed like sardines. Had a reservation for 2 hours and would have liked to sit there all evening.

Find out what distillery is releasing a hard to get bottle . Here lately BT has been randomly releasing special bottles.
There is a facebook page, what does buffalo trace have today. They post everyday and even goes as far as how long the lines(snakes) are.

We stayed at the St Clair in downtown Frankfort for about a week. It has a speakeasy there as well. Was very nice. We even hung out with Billy Bob Thornton in the speakeasy one night. Downtown Frankfort is nice.
