What athlete was far & away the best to ever play their position ?

I say Lawrence Taylor.
Whoever you want to put at #2 isn't really even close.
Ron Jaworski said that when he went to the line of scrimmage that the first thing he did was look for LT.
LT went out for a play due to injury & when Jaworski went to the line of scrimmage and couldn't find LT he called a time out.
He was too panicked to run the play because he couldn't account for LT.

Yeah I concede LT to Gretzky.
Gretzky would still be the NHL all time leading scorer even had he never scored a goal.

No, Taylor was a LB, the people you mentioned are defensive ends. 3-4 OLBs back then actually played LB, they weren’t undersized DEs like you’re talking about.
