Good clubs don’t have openings.
Clubs that have openings are not good.
If you have FB you can look up area 4 deer hunting and Louisiana deer hunting and search there. Clubs will start posting openings.

He is correct. You will find a few clubs in Woodville/Centreville that “are looking for a few good members “ every year. There’s a reason for that.

It’s not that good clubs never have openings, but good openings don’t make it past word of mouth.
OP, do not let him join some shitshow that has to resort to posting on Facebook to find someone to take advantage of then garhole. Ask people you know that hunt if they know anyone that can make room for a guy with a tractor, someone will take him up on it.

We actually just had a member get out. He may have hunted deer 5-7 times in 7 years. He would occasionally go thermal hunt pigs. But he goes on a guided hunt every year.
Instead of dealing with a new member, we just all agreed to pay the difference. If the price eventually increases a lot, we may add a close friend or family member but dealing with a unknown is more nerve wracking than anything.

He just got out of one in SW MS right past MS/LA state line. I’m not sure what happened with that.

I have an idea of what might have happened.
Fitting in with a good club is as much a social skill as anything else. He needs to find people he knows and gets along with and form a club, or knock on doors and lease some land himself. Weyerhaeuser posts entire tracts for lease this time of year.

quote:Haha. No, it’s not that. Like I said, he is a hunter and takes it very seriously. During the week, it’s less hunters in the woods. He is not fan of hunting on top of each other with alot of human scent in the woods. I’m the same way which is why I quit hunting public land. It doesn’t have anything to do with social skills.

Not sure how to tell you this my man but someone who hunts all week while everyone else is at work isn’t going to get him invited to the type of club he wants to be in. The social skill aspect is understanding that dudes with kids and jobs aren’t going to welcome in someone who has all the time in the world to sit there and kill the big deer, they want a guy that will hang out when everyone else is around, kick the fire, and hunt about the same as everyone else.
Like I said this is the time of year that Weyerhaeuser posts tracts that are up for lease, he has the tractor to do it himself and he wouldn’t have to answer to anyone.

Being retired and hunting during the week is a hard pass if I’m vetting a new member. Someone like that can and will increase the pressure on a property immensely.
I have a lease with a buddy, my son and his buddy. 4 of us on 1000 acres. That’s about the right acre to member ratio. We can spread out the pressure and we end up with stands that go unhunted every year.
It is expensive but the experience vs a club with 10 members on the same acreage is worth it.

The clubs that are advertising on facebook don’t care about that in my experience. They want the guy that brings cash, maybe has a tractor, and don’t care about much else. The deer are super pressured , there are too many members and turnover is high. This is what i experienced in one of those “clubs”. This may be a one off but I’d imagine it’s more of the norm than people realize. Members come and go each year so that no one gets to know anyone. It becomes every man for himself and that doesn’t make for a good experience
Getting some land to lease is definitely preferred if he can find something desirable.

It’s all relative. If you work a job where you can hunt during the week, public land is fine. . Especially if you bow hunt. You don’t have to deal with weekend drunks or drama or the feedlots that many “hunting” stands have become.
