My kids love Angelo Brocato's in New Orleans

quote:

Angelo Brocato® Original Italian Ice Cream Parlor has been operated by the Brocato family in New Orleans, Louisiana for over one hundred years, but our history is steeped in the Sicilian traditions that could be found in the capital city of Palermo at the end of the 19th century. Along with his brother Giuseppi, our grandfather, Angelo, began his apprenticeship in one of the city’s most elegant ice cream parlors at 12 years old.

Depending on the age of the kids, a stop at the Children’s Museum should be on the list. Fun experience that will also bring you inside City Park.

The museum has an attached restaurant, Acorn, that is run by the Brennan’s. Solid food with coffee and (importantly) adult drinks.

If you are traveling between laffy and nola via Baton Rouge, considers stopping at Houmas House. Incredible plantation home and gardens, the owner has sunk a ton of money into the property over the years. They also have a really good lunch restaurant (Carriage House) that is worth eating at if you are hungry.

If you are heading through Morgan City to get to NOLA consider a stop at Tobasco.

Step one, outside of lafayette one day for lunch go to glendas creole kitchen.

Step two, when driving to new orleans, hop over to 190 instead of I10. It only adds 15 minutes but will make sure you dont ger stuck on the basin AND you can stop at kartchners and billys in krotz springs. Don't speed.

Step three, a brief stop in port allen at bergerons. Steak burritos and ribeye bites. The boudin is...acceptable.

Step four, couyons in port allen. It is a bbq spot. The BBQ is meh. With two exceptions. Somehow they make smoked turkey taste really good. And the mardi gras potato add fried shrimp...has outstanding fried shrimp.

Step five, in mew orleans go to parkway bakery and tavern. Get a roast beef poboy. Get a potato poboy (some say the original style) snd get a surf and turf (roast beef with fried shrimp).

Step 6, creole creamery specifically on prytannia street. Skip the usual flavors... Be adventurous. Lavender and honey, magnolia, la vie on rose, absinthe, blueberry rum are all seasonal and outstanding. Avoid creole cream cheese unless you like CREOLE cream cheese. Think less icing and more cheese.

Check out cypress lake/swamp on ULL's campus, alligators can be seen from multiple areas. Then go get a poboy at Pop's downtown on Jefferson St. or Old Tyme Grocery (shrimp).

Avery Island is a very good call.

Vermillionville Living History Museum is a great place to learn about Cajun history and they have a restaurant with pretty good food.

An Airboat Swamp Tour or traditional boat tour in the Atchafalaya Basin would be very cool since the Basin is full of wildlife .... another option McGees Swamp Tours .... detailed list of local Swamp Tours

Crawfish Haven / Ms Roses B&B ... you can stay here, book a crawfish tour, catch the crawfish and they are cooked for you ... would be a great experience for your children

Lafayette Travel calendar of events good resource to check out local happenings

Lafayette Travel Guide ... another resource
