I loved those courses as a kid and in high school.

Couldn’t ask for a better place to play.

Yea they weren’t in pristine condition but they were good tracks and a good test.

The west was supposedly the “championship” course but the East was always my favorite. Had a great finishing hole.

Katrina killed them.

I wish they would have just reopened these instead of building the new South Course.

I miss the old city park, was a great time playing golf in the 90s.

Good clubhouse with good food and always packed with older baws playing cards.

Time does indeed fly.

Does anyone have photos or anything from the old courses? I didn’t pickup golf till well after the east and west courses were gone unfortunately.

Some of the best memories i have. I’ve walked those courses as a kid so many times I’ve lost count. I was a huge fan of the East course. Solid munies, clubhouse was awesome, reeked of cigs and old degenerates. Good times.

As a kid, my friends and I played the old South course. We started playing West in college and later.

Loved the old East and West. Both were good courses and the best part back then with 4 courses at City Park, pace of play wasn't a big issue.

I grew up walking the East course with my dad in the late 80's, and hitting balls at the driving Range with him. I gave up on Golf in the early 90's until I got my first real job in Golf in 1999 and the bosses made me play with them once a week. In 2015, Billy Casper Golf had me go back to the North Course and grow in the greens that were being renovated. I didn't agree with the way it was being done, but they weren't concerned with doing it right. That North course with a little TLC could be really fun walking course.

I forgot about the little South Course that ran right by Christian Brothers.

100%.

18 on that course is no joke.

Great walking track.

LOVED them. The West course was great. Broke 80 for the first time at the East course. Never played the North course.

awesome.

The only problem with the East is that it didn't come back to the clubhouse but they had the little snack shack to take care of you after 9.

Hell yeah baw. Learned on North, grew up to play East and West. I learned my awesome punch out game from finding myself under the oak trees on East way too many times. West would get super windy, but I loved that stretch of East by the softball fields then taking the right turn down Harrison.

I played the East course a lot in the early 90’s. My favorite of the four. I liked the fact that it didn’t come back to the clubhouse until 18 because it seemed to make it less crowded.

I also played the South course a lot, since it could be played in 2 1/2 hours. Very laidback course. I remember having to tee off over 2 chicks sunbathing in the middle of the fairway.

Yes, but I didn’t mind. Bring snacks and a drink.
Ive never seen the new south course. Wish they could bring back one of the two oldies.

They should have just cut the grass and re opened them.

The upgraded South Course with $100 green fees wasn’t needed IMO.

Here’s what they should’ve done post Katrina:

Take the millions of federal dollars, hire a young architect, redo the North,East, and West. And the driving range. Make it fun, cool green complexes, weird shite. South always felt like an afterthought.

Here’s what they should do now:

Turn the North into a nine hole lighted fun course. Turf tees, redo the greens. Put a nice bar where the starter hut is now. Figure out a loop that keeps everybody close to the start. And I’d say redo the South greens to add some character but that’s a bonus.

I wouldn’t have thought so 25 years ago, but now in light of the success of all of these Topgolf-type places, that is a damn good idea. You can even put a little indoor/outdoor restaurant (with patio heaters) in there and make it a date night/destination place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. With the driving range so close, people could choose to either actually play on the North course or go to the driving range where they can have some Topgolf-type computer simulators.

And given the area, it’s one of the few places in Orleans Parish, that people would consider relatively safe to go to at night. The Lakeview people and the Metairie people could get in and get out without much of a crime issue.

I have not been to City Park area since before Katrina. Do they still have the space? Could one of them actually be restored? No idea if it could be done or not. If the West could be restored / enhanced, that would be awesome. I’m sure it's a financial decision.

What a complex that was! Played many times there while in med school during late 70's and early 80's. Had a love/hate relationship with E, W, and S (hardly played the North) but really hate the damage from Katrina-don't even recognize the place now.
