Rumors are swirling Trump will announce our exit from NATO tonight

While I doubt that happens tonight, the thought of it happening right now with the Ukraine issue, and all of Europe puffing their chest last week, makes me hope it does happen.
Having to watch Europe actually stand up and defend itself will be glorious and might even put them back on track enough that they suddenly decide maybe being invaded by Muslims is worse than the threat of Russians.

We're not pulling out of NATO. Trump needs the world to believe we will pull out so they start investing more into it and things get a bit more equitable. Then and only then will NATO truly be an alliance that we belong in. Otherwise, NATO is America and we're paying for two armies. That's ridiculous.

No, we are paying for one. It's just that we've been pivoting away from ensuring European security as Europe has decreased in global importance after the Cold War.

Thankfully the prevailing westerlies aren't the prevailing eaterlies, or else we'd be smelling millions of britches filled with European shite. But, I doubt that happens at this point.

Even if we pull out of NATO, it will be more symbolic than anything.
We will still respond if someone attacks Western Europe. We can't afford not to present that threat

Europe is expediting this process by allowing their countries to be invaded without even waging a war

Of course, but just like Trump has been saying about Canada and how they don't fund their army because they know we will protect them due to proximity, our protection comes with conditions. That is one of his points in Canada becoming 51

Its time to at least start making everyone know we're for real. Zelenskyy needs to come to his senses and come back begging. If he thinks Europe will do shite for him, he's got another thing coming.
Without US aid, Russia will take all of Ukraine within weeks.

The president announcing his intent to leave NATO absent a peace deal and changes to EU policies would be enough to give us an out if they try to go direct kinetic force in Ukraine.

The deep state will dig deep in their pockets to buy riots if this happens.

Preface by saying I’m no expert on NATO, but what is the downside of getting out of it, other than Europe gets mad?
Is it that it opens a door for (insert whichever evil invader) to march into Europe? Couldn’t we still choose to defend Europe even if we aren’t obligated to do so via NATO?
Not suggesting we should or shouldn’t be part of it - just wanting to better understand ramifications

I doubt he will announce complete w/d. As a ratified treaty, I would have to imagine there are specific actions that have to be undertaken to formally withdraw.

How do we ensure they don't invoke Article 5 on us though? How do we get out of this and ensure they don't try to force un into anything? Trump won't do it, but everything with them seems to be this game trying to undermine him or make plays in public opinion.
How do we leave NATO if that is a plan? Change our number?

He's not pulling out of NATO but he may threaten to close some military bases to clear their sinuses.
Military bases over seas are huge for the local economies and some nations will go nuts if they think they could be losing bases.
