Don't ask people to work for free. And yes, advice is work.

that would be a company not a person. possessing a LA contractors license is not an indication nor guarantee of competence. a person would be a master electrician, who if he's good is out working this morning and not really interested in an email conversation for giving out free advice

glad i could help

Get yourself the latest copy of the National Electric Code (NEC). I believe the 2024 version is out now.

Or you looking for an individual or business… because the license you speak of said person having doesn’t mean anything but said person has that license…

you guys have me curious on licensing requirements in Louisiana. I'm guessing you're referring to more than one owner of the contracting business in which the license is filed under?

In CA my license is under my sole proprietorship so there is no way around not actually being a master journeyman level.

companies are licensed not people. each license requires at least one qualifying party which in your instance would be you. yes you have to take the test but that doesnt mean you are actually competent in the field.

for example, i am the qualified party for our GC license. i am in no way competent in the field

A licensed electrical contractor is considered a business rather than a person, as it refers to a company or firm that specializes in electrical construction work, typically employing licensed electricians to perform the actual electrical tasks

It’s not rare at least in Louisiana it isn’t that the person who holds the professional license for a company doesn’t know what’s actually going on for lack of a better term

I have a friend who is an electrical contractor and she’ll be the first to tell you she knows nothing about electricity but knows how to run a business and how to hire those that do, times change but my dad was a GC and the license was in his name as an individual

This is pretty standard in Louisiana especially.. another quirk down here some of you have probably ran across is the guy over engineering at some shops not even an engineer

I could be if the money is right....have an active unrestricted electrical contractors license in Georgia and Louisiana has a reciprocal agreement with Georgia (surprisingly few such agreements for electrical contractors in Louisiana). Have had the equivalent license in Texas and Tennessee which both have the same agreement with Louisiana but neither of those is current (Texas may be but its getting close). That said consulting is how I make a living so the money would have to make it worthwhile to apply for a reciprocal license.....probably cheaper to hire a contractor in the state.

That being said nothing about any state professional licensing is indicative of any level of competence in anything other than test taking. If anyone doubts this watch the way people drive cars and consider who says they are competent to do so.....
