I have to buy a new car and everyone keeps saying they’re unreliable so I appeal to the wisdom of the OT in this matter

It's not the engine that people say is unreliable.

Well, it's a transmission. Not an engine.

CVT refers to the (continuously variable) transmission, not the engine.

But yes, many CVTs have reliability issues, most natably in Nissans.

Ok ok ok that’s what I meant, the CVT transmission.

Nissan - no
Honda, Toyota - good
Subaru - ok

No first hand experience with others.

What transmission is in a Tundra? 225,000 miles pulling a boat for half of those. Still trucking. No issues.

Honda and Toyota also have CVTs that don't get the publicity that Nissan's does because they're just not shitty like Nkssans.

I know all Corolla s since like the '14 model have CVTs. Someone explained it to me once and I never researched it so, take this with a grain of salt: Apparently, the most stress is put on a CVT when accelerating from a dead stop. Makes sense, so Toyota uses a traditional gear for first gear, or a "launch gear" before it switches over to the CVT for better efficiency.

Subaru's is good, at least in my experience for 12 years.

Any CVT will have a 5 year warranty. Your transmission will fail in 1,830 days. Guaranteed

Do the demographics of the ownership for these brands play into their reliability? Honda and Toyota have completely different set of owners than Nissan, from my personal experience people that own the former set of brands are more likely to keep up on maintenance whereas the latter routinely goes 15k miles between oil changes.

I'll add to this by saying JATCO is the manufacturer of Nissan CVTs and they're probably responsible for 99% of the CVT horror stories you've heard. Honda designs and makes their own. A company called Aisin makes Toyota CVTs and is a major supplier for Toyota and I believe is actually owned by Toyota AG.

So it's no surprise that the two companies who have vested interest in their CVT components being high quality aren't having the same issues as the manufacturer that contracted theirs out to the lowest bidder.

I doubt Nissan would have paid out hundreds of millions of dollars in class action settlements because their customers didn't perform proper maintenance.

Nissan knew the transmissions were faulty and still put them in their vehicles. Bit them hard in the end.

Just like most anything else, they usually don't fail within the warranty period. So, whateveryou do, don't keep it longer than that.

CVT's in ATV/UTV's seem to be much more reliable than in passenger vehicles...

I have a honda CVT with 200,000 miles. I swap out about 3 quarts of trans oil every 20,000 miles and have never had an issue. Runs great.
